Potential new CLS55 owner...some guidance please to help make the right choice!
Hi everyone,
New member here from the UK...have been browsing through the forums and have got my heart set on a UK spec CLS55 AMG, but need some guidance if possible from you all...
Basically im selling for Focus RS Mk1 and hoping to replace with a Mercedes CLS W219. I know I might not get something that was as quick as the Focus from the outset (the Focus was 431hp in a light chassis)...so I have been looking at 2 alternatives...either the 320CDI (purely for fuel economy reasons), or the CLS55 AMG (for the petrol head in me)...
Is there anything in particular I should look out for?
I have seen two models that have really caught my eye...
CLS320cdi - 2007 model, black, black leather, full AMG kit, 96,000 miles
CLS55 AMG - 2005 model, black, black leather, 104,000 miles
Both are priced similar
I have a few questions about them...
I have heard the 320cdi's suffer from gearbox problems? Can anyone shed any light on this?
Should I be concerned about the mileage on either model? Both have Mercedes Service history and seem to be well looked after....
Are the Superchargers on the AMG reliable after such mileage? When would they need rebuilding?
Also when should a timing belt/chain need replacing?
Thank you for any help...im just trying to work out what the best long term investment vehicle would be...
Many thanks
Amar

CLS55
The superchargers are fine, its the cooling (intercooler) of the supercharger that you should check. make sure the intercooler pump is working well. Check the belts, and pulley bearings after time they do start to squeak, a good test is to start the car and turn the wheel left to lock try to listen to that power steering pump as it puts tension on the belt system. Check the airmatic system for leaks.
Also remember that M113 K engine alone costs $25,000 (US) to the maint is a thing to look into for the future. all in all no issues with my CLS55, its a beast of a motor, but not much in fuel economy like the CDI, the best i can get on the highway is about 19.7 MPG thats on cruise control going 70mph.
good luck!
