Major engine work, after leaving car at dealership

I went to pick up my car from the dealership yesterday. It was in there for rear spring issues. No engine issues when I dropped it off. When I go to pick it up, the lot guy brings my car in, and i hear this loud rattling coming from the engine. Thinking it might be some just because it's cold, I drove about a 10th of a mile, turned around, and brought it back in to the dealership.

The engine is making a really loud rattling noise, that increases audibly when the gas was pressed down. I was told it was inside the engine. They tore the valve covers off and said that "Cam lobes have worn through lifter tops, metal in oil". I was told that all of the lifters, chain tensioner, and all 4 cams needs to replaced for $9k.

Has anyone heard of this happening to 63 motors? Are these the same symptoms that the class action lawsuit went after?

Car is 2008 cls63 with 86k miles, and it's not driven hard. All maintenance has been kept up to date by only Mercedes dealerships.

Appreciate any advice.

it is not uncommon for the 63 to have cam, lifter and head issues. ask for goodwill they know they have a problem make sure you only use mobil 1

Looks like they took your car for a mean test drive. I wouldn't of accepted the car from the stealership. Plain and simple . Good luck keep us posted

UPDATE: replaced all camshafts and lifters. See bad lifter with hole it in compared to another one that was removed. Can't tell if the camshafts have bad wear on them. Will investigate further this weekend.

Repair is done and car is running ok so far, but I'm waiting for something else to go wrong...

...man that really sucks, leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, when you have some work done & it comes out sicker than it went in!!!

Do you know for sure, that it has always had full synthetic oil used at every change??? Maybe they have been using dino oils??
