CLS 55 Vibration on Highway

Today while driving on the highway at around 70 MPH the car started to vibrate and shake (slightly at first then more severe). Pulled over to the side if the road to investigate and found nothing. Moved to the next exit and used a parking lot to further diagnose, having my wife drive the car by at various speeds so I could listen to see if I could hear any noises. Nothing. Continued trip without any further incident (30 miles).

This happened a while back (over a year ago) and I figured it was the road after it went away after pulling off the highway and stopping. This time I'm sure it wasn't the road and it was a fairly violent shake.

Any ideas why this would only manifest itself randomly (twice in a year and half of ownership) and without warning? Car has 67,000k on it.

what kind of vibration is it? Is it a steering wheel shimmy, from the rear so you feel it in the seat of your pants, etc.? Any additional info would be valuable although its really hard to diagnose over the web.

From the rear it seemed. It wasn't the engine. I put it in neutral and to decrease the RPM's. I could see the rear headrests shaking, but you could feel it throughout the car.

I'd get it to an alignment shop and have the rear alignment checked. Remember the rear squats after 65-70 which changes the camber of the rear tires and cause them to ultimately wear on the inside. Sounds like alignment and/or balance.

It could be an occasional malefaction in the lowering module as the car lowers down while you increase the speed. Try to scan the car for a potential errors.
If I was you I would let my wife drives again and I will scan the car while the shaking is happening. if no errors in the car then an alignment garage should be your next stop.
Good luck and update us if you figured it out.

I have not had a reoccurrence in the last few days. I even had my wife drive at highway speeds as I paced on my motorcycle looking for abnormalities, nothing. I don't know why it happened, I also don't like just leaving it to happen again. Perplexed.

Did you scan the car for any errors?
It could be defected lowering module. But ya I agree, don't let it go....Track it down before it becomes a major issue.

I haven't scanned for errors. Does it need to go to the dealership to connect to Star to do that? Or will a OBD scanner show it?

Your best bet is to use a Star dealership. However, most of us have a (kinda first aid diagnose tool) OBD2 scanner to early discover any issue with the car.
I use this one
ieGeek® WIFI Wireless OBD2 OBD II Auto Scanner Adapter Scan Tool for iPhone iPad iPod: Amazon.ca: Electronics ieGeek® WIFI Wireless OBD2 OBD II Auto Scanner Adapter Scan Tool for iPhone iPad iPod: Amazon.ca: Electronics
with my iPhone and "Dash Command" app for $12. it works well with my CLS63 AMG and quite frankly, you can never go wrong with this price compared to a genuine Star tool.
Try it and it should shed some light on the problem. But if you use the car on a daily basis, don't wait until you receive the tool and then diagnose. just go to a star dealership and keep the tool for future use.

Connected the sensor and it doesn't have any errors/faults in the log. Drove it today, 50 mile round trip at speeds up to 85 MPH with no issues.

Then keep driving the car for few more trips.
keep the tool connected while driving and don't forget to log info while driving.
(Tip; hook your phone on the charger as this operation will drain it's battery quickly).
If the shaking happened while the device is recording, you can pull aside and do codes reading. (or while driving get the passenger to do codes reading). If still no codes. Then your last hope is to visit an alignment/star repair garage.

Before you order that Would suggest Autel MD802 Elite scan tool. It does almost all systems including the transmission control module and is reasonable from what I hear on the forum. It can be found at Amazon.

do you have aftermarket rims ..??? If you do you might have a loose or broken plastic ring looking thing that goes between the rim and hub. Mine was forgetten at the last tire place and they put the rim on, and anything above 80 and the car shakes like is gonna exploded. I could feel it in my seat and sterrrring wheel. Its an easy 30$ fix.

No aftermarket rims, stock 19" AMG's. New tires last year with about 5k on them.
