No CLS 55 according to Car and Driver
I just read the October 2004 issue of Car and Driver today. On page 80 it states that the CLS will be first available as the CLS 500. "The CLS500 four-door sedan debuts with a 302-hp, 5.0-liter V-8 and seven-speed automatic."
Then it states...
"AMG is also preparing its version of the CLS500-the CLS65-which will share its 604-hp V-12 with the CL65 and SL65 and carry a six-figure price."
I wish they would just have a CLS55 as well. Would be alot cheaper.

Interesting disparity in info.
The AMG website info looks 'official' alright.
I wonder where C&D obtained their info.
A phone call to AMG in the USA (New Jersey hdqtrs) would likely resolve the dispute.

Hey...don't shoot the messanger.
Maybe the CLS55 will only be offered in european countries. Since there are no CLS's in the USA now, then maybe all these pics are from overseas. Maybe the USA release of the CLS will only offer the CLS500 and the CLS65.
Hmmmmm...maybe?

Maybe this will shed some light on it. On the same page, after they cover each model, there is a "dead" section. These are the models that are being discontinued.
It reads as follows:
"Dead: C32 AMG, C230K, SLK230 Kompressor, SLK320, CL55 AMG, SL55 AMG, SLK32 AMG."
This would make sense why there are no more 55's in the higher end models....thus no 55 in the CLS either.

Hate to rain on the CLS65 parade but my dealer "In the US" called me today to speck out my CLS55. They are now able to enter the cars into Netstar.
I believe someone else said it best. Put down the Crack Pipe C&D.
They are wrong more than they are right.
Don't believe everything you read, wait to see it with your own eyes.

In the US, they are coming out with the CLS500 first, then the CLS350, and then finally the CLS55. You will be able to get the CLS55, however like all AMGs, you'll just have to wait a little longer.

Isn't the C&D article referring only/mainly to US sales?
We all know that Europe gets the CLS55. The CLS55 is probably only going to be around 1 year. For 2006 model year the E55 and CLS55 should get the 6.3 liter and be E63 and CLS63. If this happens then I can see no CLS55 for the US for 2005.

They are now entering orders in the US for CLS55's for Q1 05 delivery.
I have $1000 for any bet takers that we will see a CLS55 early next year in the US.

After asking directly with AMG in Germany the story is as follows:
The CLS55 will remain in the lineup for all markets were the CLS AMG is offered, until at the earliest the facelift of the CLS (2007/8?? not sure as they did not mention when). The CLS 55 is currently available for the US with deliveries due 2005, and orders have already been received from the US.
So as for the new enigine appearing in the CLS, well the E class will get the new AMG engine (the new multivalve engines due to debut in the new S class) before the CLS, as it is due to be facelifted before the CLS. They did not mention whether it would be designated as 65 but I assume that is what they were implying, as they did not say anything to the contrary.

How does this car differ mechanically from the E55
Not that this is a criticism, but isn't the CLS55 just a design exercise? Mechanically, aren't the E55 and CLS55 twins underneath the skin? Same engine, brakes, chasis, etc?

...............I don't mean to sound like an attorney(which I am not): Nothing in the above statement has anything to do with CL55. It just affirms that there will be a CL655, but does not say that there will not be a CL55. All this is mute now, since there will infact be a CL55. I just wanted to point out that the author did not say what he is accused of saying........that there will be no CL55.

I guess the point I was trying to make when starting this thread is that if someone off the street just picked up this issue and started to read it...they would be under the assumption that there wasn't going to be a CLS 55...the way the snipit reads.
Thats all
Thank you, and goodnight.
