Mounting license plates

I tried a search, but couldnt find anything.

I bought a 2003 C32. The previous owner never installed the license plates on the car.

Regarding the rear:
There looks to be 4 holes drilled into the car. I bought some screws from the autoparts store, but they don't fit. Do I need special screws, or do I need to buy a mounting bracket of some sort? I called MB, apparently a mounting bracket for the rear exists, it costs $170 primed and unpainted. Do I need to buy this, or can my license plates be attached directly to the car?

Regarding the front:
There are no holes drilled into my bumper, and no bracket of any sort. I'm thinking of leaving the front plate off for a while, but when I get a ticket I might change my mind. MB says a bracket costs $90. How do you recommend I attach my front plate? Do I need to drill into the bumper?

license plate screw should be the same everywhere. you don't need the mounting bracket because that plastic part on the trunk IS the mounting bracket.

if you get a fix it ticket, just take some double sided tape and tape the license plate on. after the write off the ticket you can just take'em off. if you want to use the oem from bracket you will need to drill holes into the front bumper in order to secure the bracket.

Hey FrankW, is there any type of double sided tape you recommend that will hold the plate on the car while driving? Also, how do you remove it, so it won't damage the paint?

i think those 3M double side tape will work. the best way to do it is to stop somewhere and slap it on before you enter the parking lot where they gonna check it. removing the tape is just like removing the badges. blow dryer, some dental floss, and some goo-off or gum-off whatever that's called.

Great idea, how'd you do that? Can you gather up a DIY, parts list and estimated costs? I don't have my front plate on and have never had any issues but just in case I need to put it on, this would be a great solution.

That is a great solution. Please tell us the parts needed and how to install them.

nice write up on your page. Just a question - is the whole asembly still removable? what happens if you need to actually use the tow hook point?

Yes, as I mentioned in the "Positives", this is completely reversible.

If you think there is a possibility of needing access to the tow point, I guess you could carry a small set of tools to remove the license plate and modified tow bolt. You would also obviously have to buy a new hook to keep in your trunk.
