Question Torx screws for Air Filter Box

Anyone knows the part number for those torx screws for the air filter box? I lost one of those while I was changing my air filter. The part guys at MB were unable to find the part number. How much are they? It seems they are special torx screws that cannot be found easily in any hardware retail stores

Or is there any alternate screws that match these screws?

Please help.

I believe they are the same screws used in the C-class (6 screws for each air filter box). Just called one of the MB dealership, they told me it is a special order from Germany, and it costs $9 CAD (~$7 US) for 1 screw, W.T.F.!!!

Any substitutes for this kind of screw? I don't want to pay $9 for this little screws.

you stripped one of the screws?? I would say going to your local hardware store... IE: lowes, home depot, osh... places like that might have that exact thread and head size..

OT: I once stripped the screws for the hub to my momo steering wheel hub and I had to get replacement ones.. found them at the local OSH

Yes, I stripped one of those screws.

Do you mean I can just go to home depot or what-so-ever to buy the same length and size of the treaded screws for replacement?

The original one is half flush and half tread, does it really matter that I just use the full tread screw?

I can not guarantee that they will have your exact length screw but such places will have a higher probability of carrying such a fastner for <$9..each

Ok, just bought a small pack of machine screws size: 8-32-1 1/2" from Home Depot. They fit okay without problem. These screws comes in 12 pieces and they only $2.29 CAD with taxes.

Also, I suggest when you tighten your screws next time, put a little librication on the threads of the screws.

Good to know, thanks! I can't see spending $9 on a single screw. And, waiting for it to be shipped from Germany! LOL

Spending $9.00 for a screw sounds like a good deal to me, especially if she's German.

Any auto supply store should be able to match the screw, or any good hardware store.

$9 for a screw is definetly worth if she is made in Germany

However, I checked most of the auto stores in here, they did not have this particular screw. I called Barfasco yesterday, if it is custom made, it cost at least $15 CAD.

Anyway, I am happy with the metal screws that I bought from Home Depot, at least it works.

Thanks.

At least, I don't need to wait 7-10 days for the shipment and waste the money to buy one screw. Also, next time, if I lose or break one of those screws, I have my new replacement ready.

So I have the opposite problem. The last tech that put a filter in way over tightened the screw and striped all the threads off, so the screw doesn't catch. Anyone have any ideas what to do?

gdub84.....

If you're in a hurry......stick a toothpick in all the way.........break off the excess and it'll work. To do it the correct way, fill it with wood filler.....let it get semi-dry........gently, with a screwdriver.....screw in the screw and then screw it back out. Let it completely dry and the threads will be good to go......

Good luck......

Rob

Smile Found! Mercedes part no. for replacing an E55 airbox screw

Old thread but I needed the same screw—M5 34mm T45 truss head screw for plastic, with the reduced smooth shank (creating a captive aspect), and couldn't find a solid reference here. As other have noted, they come with the airbox cover, and aren't called out as a separate part.

I found a few actual screws googling about that were all like $10 each, plus shipping. BMW also use this same screw style, and it is also expensive. Other sources matched the style and size well, but had a Phillips truss head.

Anyway, turns out a readily available and inexpensive Mercedes part offers a mechanically identical screw (confirmed with calipers), except it's black and not the bright finish.

So if the color of this screw doesn't offend your E55 under-hood esthetic sensibilities, it's Mercedes part No. 639 528 00 71, and <$3 each from various sources, so buying three and getting a couple of spares for the price of one of the original unobtainable screws seemed like the way to go for me.

They fit perfectly and unlike many of the non-shank screws being sold, help with both being captive (and stay put when they are backed out but not removed from the top cover) but also allow the top cover to snug down onto the base: with the full-thread versions the entire screw has to thread its way through the top cover hole, so to pull the top cover and base together, the screw would have to strip out the entire depth of the top cover hole to allow that... so it's much more likely to strip out the base hole which is just catching a few threads at first, in the process. Noted that toothpicks have already been mentioned!

(This alternative screw is intended for use on at least some Sprinter airboxes.)

Each pair above: on left, black-finish Sprinter airbox screw, and on right, bright-finish E55 W211 airbox screw.

Late to the party, but thanks for posting the part number. This is one hard to find part number!
