I have a Valentine One and have been happy with it.. You can't go wrong with either. Whatever you get, just make sure you have cars in front . Radar detectors do nothing for you if you're driving on a deserted road...

I would wait a couple of weeks. www.speedzones.com is about to release their 2005 Radar detector test review. Last year Pasport won.

Here is last years review:

I have the Escort cordless Solo S2- it works quite well and has saved me several times. It attaches to the front windshield easily.

personal preference.. I own the BLUE.. unfortunately I got a ticket last thursday. I forgot to put my x50 in the car and ended getting a ticket. If you are gonna buy one, use it at all times.. It's like buying condoms and not using it and then SH$T happens..

I heard there're programs in the black market for Nav systems to detect five Os, but is a myth.

From the past extensive test reports I have read, V1 are the BEST at laser, but even Valentine himself will tell you 9 times outta 10, when you get the laser alert, you are toast already.

Passport wins by a nose overall. I have been very pleased with mine.

Saves my butt time after time, plus X50 allows you to lock out bands like X (wasn't sure if newer V1's allow you to block bands) so Walmart etc won't drive you to drinking.

Can't go wrong with either, but Passport so far is about the best you can get.

No offense to V1 dudes, they seem to be a super loyal crowd and get pretty upset when this comes up.

Do the radar guns in HK operate on the same frequencies as those in the US? I would double check before spending my money.

honesly i dont trust radar detectors, I used to have one but I got false alarms. but this time, false alarms are really what I need. :p (joke)
anyway, I give up if there were guns there, but I wish the Passport
can at least detect the fixed cameras as there are two many of them in HK
thanks

I got the X50 here now !

Just received my X50 hand carry from a good friend from Chicago.
Plugged it this morning , nice color, seems much userfriendly than the first generation I had 10 yrs ago. It did not make one sound for the 25km trip I passed by to work ( may be the radar ones in the tunnel was being turned off due to recent heavy rain , for safety reason )
I really not sure if the bands are matching the laser guns and radars here in HK.....will know if time. One more thing is , it seems the unit hits on the windowshield glass and made noise !

Valentine 1 was the only detector to pick up laser from behind the targeted car. My personal experience with a PP8500 next to a V1, the V1 beat it hands down.

V1 is good coz it so damn loud, and its GOT THE ARROWS! so useful!
I never got a ticket b4 in HK but still..i use the V1 in HK!

V1 all the way!

You cannot beat the directional arrows of the V1. No other detector has this...

Finally the unit is working!

Ok, just done 30km to test out the unit and X50 was working.

There was a radar camera on my left side ( we are RHD drivers ) , and the unit was installed on the lower right side corner. When I was about 100 yards approach the camera, the unit only alerts me when my car was aleady too close to it! Anyway, look like the X50 is working ok with the radar frequency bands in HK. I never heard about V1.

tony u know why?

coz in HK, the cameras take pictures of our car's REAR LICENSE plates.
Their radar signals are focused the opposite direction of your radar detector
it is already really good to be able to pick up the signals.

look at the diagram:

your car with radar heading east is ....[==>
camera facing east is..... =>
radar signals heading east is..... >>>>>>
little or no signal is.......---------------

_____________________ => _________________________________
------------------------- > > > > > > > > > >
[==> East bound

__________________________________________________ ________

in the US. Cops usually habe the the radar signals aimed directly into your incoming direction, so your radar picks up much better...

I love my V1...of course its the only radar detector I've owned, so I may be a little biased.

Mez- How are you using a radar detector in VA? I want to get one but they are illegal. I was thinking of getting one and using it when I drive into MD but didnt think it was worth it. Does you radar make it impossible for the cops to know you have one? like a jammer or something? let me know if there is a way around having one in VA

Had the V1 for less than 30 days - falsed so much while driving the highways between Corpus, Austin, and Dallas that I returned it to V1.

The Passport 8500 and 8500 X50 seem to be as accurate w/o all the false alarms. The design isn't as bulky, and the customizable features of the Passport are amazing for a detector.
