You guys do realize that no pro driver can shift as fast with a stick than the auto does right?

Automatics are always believed to be slow because they kill off more hp to the wheels. Autos are not slow as far as shifting goes.

The 350 horse LS1 GTO's run high 13's, while the LS2's run low 13's. With a proper launch and a couple quick shifts, the GTO should be able to keep up with a C55. they are tricky to get going off the line though since that car is oddly equipped with either 245 wide tires on 17" wheels, or 235's on 18's. Kinda skinny for a 400 horsepower performance car.

Now factor in the relatively low price of mods on the GTO and how responsive those cars are, and they can get pretty quick for cheap.

If it wasn't for the FUGLY styling, I'd already be in one. I like the size, I like the drive, but can't get used to its looks.

We used to swear by GM, but for the first time ever we have an import gracing the driveway. Thank you MB for the wonderul car.

05 gto owner checking in here guys, just wanted to say that my best friend owns a silver c55 and we've raced a couple times and it was close but i always beat him by 1-2 carlength. i have been drag racing all my life and the best 1/4 mile time i have gotten is 12.9 @ 109 with a 1.9 60' on crappy all season tires (track elevation is 1100 ft). the only mod i have is an intake (5 hp) and that was full race weight (close to 4000 lbs with driver and gas) the c55's are fast and probably most c55 owners will put away an average driver in a gto but i would not take them lightly.

Considering the Vette weighs 700-800lbs less than the GTO, the GTO would be a little speck in the rear view mirror of the C6.
No matter what tires you put on the GTO.

No bashing meant, Just bringing the weight difference to light

Just to let you guys know, GTO's have a lot of traction issues, this is why street tires seem to be an equalizer in many of the encouters you guys have mentioned. GTO's have a lot of torque and struggle for grip. Slap on some drag radials and the power of the GTO will be more obvious and the race will be more one-sided at least against a C32. GTO's are pigs on street tires, but once they have traction it's a different story

can't you read your own post? you didn't mention it, and calling anything a piece of ***** is a pretty ignorant statement, you probably have some "american pieces of *****" that you love laying around? and I would think that if "your parents" can afford to buy a fine automobile like a CLK55 for you, your parents are probably putting you through school to get a pretty decent american piece of **** education, I personally would have handled the comment better, but I guess that is just you and I would have expected that from you. I would get that little "racing chip off your shoulder, but then again, thats just me also, so I guess I would leave you alone now and I hope next time you offer to meet anyone half way for a race, that you be careful, and don't hurt yourself, because there are a lot of ****ty american doctors out there, Have a good one champ

I have a good kill story too........Check it out, I was racing this G4 jet right, first one through (not throught) the tunnel, and I completely killed it because it won't fit in the tunnel...I am the KING of tunnel racing!!! did I mention that I murdered it throuGH the tunnel...completely ripped it apart

when you type, you have to press keys, its no accident, as for the cars, I work and pay for them, slowly but surely, ML in 98, 4 year payment plan to the C32 2002, 4 years again, and now, towards the end of 2005 the GTO, just wanted to go american this time, and with the pontiac red tag sale, it was a good deal, and in 4 years who knows, but anyways, I'm just having fun with you, I actually really like the CLK55, I would actually love to just be able to afford your HRE's, but who knows, maybe some day after I finish school. maybe if you ever come up my way or if I ever came down your way, I'll shoot you a pm and check out those "twisties" anyways, I guess I will let this little rivalry die, good luck in school and with your car........Tommy

Traction smaction, we were rolling at around 50 when we hit it. I didn't so much as hear a chirp.

I was merely making the observation that I appreciated the specs on the GTO and expected it to creep on me and eventually pass. I was surprised that we were so evenly accelerating.

This C32 is just one sweet car for the money, as is the GTO I'm sure. My american corvette and my german C36 were in the shop about as much as they were on the road, but I loved them both. So this thread was not meant to bash the GTO, it was in appreciation of both cars. I haven't even begun to push the C32, but I already know its highs and lows. Despite its awkward handling and its frightening maintenance record so far, it's going to take one hell of a car to get me to step out of this one for a few years.

Hey what's up...first post...I have an '05 GTO...

I ran a CL55 AMG last night here in Vegas...was it you? Sorry if I mixed up the models, I'm not familar w/the MB line...(asked about the car, 469/516 so it was the blown 5.4L)

If not...we tried to run twice...not enough room/or traction for either of us...but on the 2nd run the AMG was beginning a slow pull once I got to into 3rd...

Either way it fun...the guy and his passenger were cool as hell.

FWIW...the best I've been able to manage at the track is a 13.5 @ 105 here in LV (horrible 2.1s 60')...but that was prior to the tuning I just had done (eliminates torque management, also allows power shifting)...and this was when the DA was 3500'...

Another 05 here in Vegas (on same setup as me but has had his tune done) has turned in a 13.2 @ 109...on the crappy all-season rubber GM gave us

In stock form with a good driver/conditions the 05 GTO is good for high 12s/low 13s...

But the GTO is not a drag car by any means...4000lbs w/fuel and driver, coupled with 245 rubber on 17's, soft IRS setup, and a two piece driveshaft...it's a real ***** to launch these things until you bolt on DRs...

But I digress...I think the guy said his name was Ramone(?)...does anyone know him?

Thanks!

No... that wasn't me. I have a silver c55.

13.5 @ 105 and 13.2 @ 109 ... those are damn good times!!! I'm sorry but I've never seen those times on that particular car at the track and I'm a track junky (there everytime it's open). I'll be going to the track on 1/27 for test n tune. Please come up there and run your car and let's clear this up once and for all.

Oh I've already marked my calendar...gates open and close early, think it's an 11-5 event that day.

Work usually gets interferes with fun, but I'm planning on excusing myself early that Friday

And I'm not surprised you haven't seen better times out of the GTOs...I've only made 7 or so passes...a couple of which I feathered out and coasted due to traction issues...a couple more where I did in fact go low 14s...

There's a group of us (GTO owners) that tries to get together and run @ the strip...most can't get into 13s (I haven't seen an 04 get into the 13s actually)...but it's not the car, it's the driver...

I look forward to meeting you...seems you've got yourself a real screamer there!

You're absolutely right... it can definitely be all driver and I know as well as anyone... it's all about traction. My car varies from 11.9-12.5 depending on traction.

I too look forward to meeting you!

BTW -- It could have been my buddies CL65 you raced. Was it on the street? Was it a 2-door coupe? The CL65 is not a v8 though... it's a v12-twin turbo.

It was a sedan...it was a blown V8...the owner new his s***...we pulled into a parking lot and talked for a bit...

Since I don't have a MB, nor the ability to tell one model from the next (my ignorance is showing)...I probably won't stay active on this forum over the next few weeks , but I'll shoot you a PM as we get closer to the 27th...

See ya!

Oh...11.9 - 12.5s? That's pretty damn consistent in my book...
