c55 redline horror

i was chasing my friend's BMW last night after the car a full still at the give way line. i was not aware the gear was M1 ( i thought i was in AUTO) and when I felt the car wasn't going any further and noticed the meter pin was staying in mid of the red zone , for quite a few seconds and then I realized and shifted it to M2.
Questions:-
1. Why C55 does not cut the fuel in redline?
2. I worry this has hurted the engine / tranny , or isn't?

tks

Unless you've had the rev limiter removed electronically, I'm sure it was kicking in. Just like speedometers, I'm under the impression that tachometers are also not superbly accurate at the higher end of their range. If it was reading 6000 rpm, it was probably more like 5800 rpm.

Anyway, the engine is pretty much bullet proof. The electronics prevent you from blowing it up. If you had a manual transmission and downshifted into a low gear at a high speed, then you'd be in real trouble.

A guy on the S4 forum did just that (100mph, downshifted into 2nd) and left the tranny on the highway. This is virtually impossible to do with an automatic.

Looking for a new toy.
The rev limiter still works, even in M mode, so other than an injured pride from losing to a BMW, you didn't hurt anything else .

You have 3 driving seating’s in your car there is S/W/M with that little button next to the gear shifter, in you are in M mode then the fuel will not cut out that easly because Benz wanted to give there drivers a full fell of a standard so they let you put the read line quite far in the new cars with the M2 mode, but if you are in “S” mode the car will shift gears on its own when it hits read line, until then it will rev. the “W” setting the car starts off in 2nd gear to avoid spinning in snow and slippery conditions.

Yes, i was in M mode. The gear was always in M1 position and damn that rev pin stayed in the red zone for a few seconds and did not look like it wanted to cut at all. This I know is a good news to many ppl. Goosh, this damn C55 is a true animal , having owned it for two years and driven 33000km; I would have thought I never knew this car's potential so well. My driving style is I only floor the car when it is at least in M2 , not M1.

It should auto shift to M2 when you hit red line. Even in manual mode the car auto shifts at redline.

If you are in M mode your car is not going to auto shift. It is a true manual mode and you will hit rev limiter if you do not hit the upshift paddle.

+1 on Not auto shift

If your in M mode ... you will hit the redline and stay there unless you upshift or stop accelerating.

Even in the manual transmission in my C-class if you make a mistake it still limits you! Crazy eh?

none
Slightly unrelated in terms of vehicle but my C43 has some issues with redline once in a while. The thing with mine is that it happens in S mode with the car in 4th expecting it to shift through the gears on its own. Never tried riding out 2nd to see if it shifts though. It messes up on its own..

Seems to only happen when I floor it at a speed that requires a big downshift. Pulling out of a turn then nailing it, cruising at 30ish, etc... It seems as if the car will kick down and when that lower gear should upshift it hits reline and does the redline hich-up. Its loud, violent, and scary with the S/C spinnging and all the noise so I get right off the gas. Its happened probably 20 times almost 2 years. Driving in W mode lately seems almost as fast as the car shifts much freindlier and just seems smooth and less violent.
