Weird A/C problem..

Weird A/C problem..
Whenever I start my car and turn on A/C, it works fine for about 5 min then it turns off by it self.. After another 5 min, A/C works again w/o any problems but I can smell something from A/C..
ne idea why? car has about 16,000 miles now..
