How about...a response that has an opinion, back by facts?
I would get the C55 if you don't live in a heavy snow area. I have to feather the throttle when it is raining outside! I dread snowfall. It is certianly faster (stock) in the race to 60 and the race to 100. Traps higher too, I believe. With some mods though I hear the S4s can get some crazy HP numbers. Might be the older body style though, the B5s, because they were so mod friendly. I don't follow Audis much. If you are one of those enthusiasts who has to press three pedals when driving...get the S4.
My conclusion would be...both are great cars, the C55 would be a better everyday car with the ability to spank a lot of other cars on the road...where as the S4 will be almost as good, but will handle better on the track (face it, you don't see many chicanes in the streets!), and possibly with a few mods be faster than the AMG.
Personally I would go with the C55.

win/win
C55 is faster in a straightline, especially on the highway.
Overall handling is comparable. Neither are Queen Vics, but they aren't Carrera's either.
If you live in a place where it rains a lot or snows, then get the S4 as in those conditions it is quicker than a great deal of high performance cars, including C55s.
S4 got facelifted last year so values on pre-facelift models can give good deals to potential buyers but car will date quicker than C55 which did not receive a facelift.
Both give equally bad mpg, but that's to be expected.
You can't really go wrong. Whichever you can get the best deal on and has the color/options you want... just put down for.

Well.. there isn't an 04 C55 so you will have to start with an 05.. which will be more expensive than the 04 S4. I personally like the look of the C55 over the S4.. I have never driven an Audi so I can't comment on performance.
I don't think I would buy any current/past Audi over any current/pasy MB.. just an opinion.. who knows what the future will hold. I am really excited about the new w204 C.. especially If it looks anything like the new S class in a smaller version..

a car that can't do the throttle reset.
I own an 04 S4.. and a 04 C32.
C32 > S4... and many say C55 > c32
S4 positives- predictable and docile when cruising. recaro seats. awd. and amazing exhaust note with dp's and exhaust. understated looks.
negatives-predictable and docile when going all out. backend doesnt swing out when wanted. understated looks.

C55 AMG, 135i, 911 GT3, GLE43 AMG
From a performance point of view, the W203 C55 is better than the B6 S4 in viturally every category when you look at the numbers from magazine tests(straight line accleration, 1/4 mile time and trap speed, braking distance, skidpad grip, slalom speed, laptimes around Nurburgring/Hockeheim). The C55 is significantly lighter, and is quite a bit more fuel efficient too.
However, the C55 only comes with an automatic transmission, and the quattro AWD of the S4 will provide more traction and peace of mind in wet and snowy conditions.
Both great cars.
