I will be having some snow tires put on in the upcoming weeks as well. The dealership recommended Continental Snows TS790 ($154 per tire) and Michelin Alpine 2 Pilot ($187 per tire) plus $75 to mount and balance all four. There was also a Pirelli option that was near $225, if I remember correctly.

Am very curious to see what others recommend.

Hankook Icebear W300 are an excellent value with high load index and a VR speed rating. Go with 225/45/17 all around. These are on a C55.

yes dude, but from my former trips to Finland my mate in Helsinki told me that those winter tyres you can get in Finland are those with the metallic spykes which are not sold in mainland Europe for sure and not so sure they are sold in the USA as well........
those winter tyres you have up there are the best, here in Italy we don't even go close to such quality........

I know it doesn't help with turning or slowing down, but the LSD helps big time. We had one freak snowstorm a couple weeks ago, and my car still had excellent traction even with PS2 summer tires.

I did Yokohama IceGuards (the 755 or whatever, higher end ones) and they worked fine. This year I'm storing the C32 and just picked up an S4 that came with a winter set of Nokian Hakkappallitta RSi (sp? of course could be off) which I hear are basically the best winter tire you can get outside of studs, won't know for sure until the snow flies - Mpls.

Yes Nokian Hakkapeliitta RSi is WITHOUT SPYKES and you can use them anywhere in the world without legal issues. RSi is GREAT winter tyre.

yo, man
how about availability for those WITH the spykes outside Finland and their usage mostly on dry roads instead of snowy roads? Any chance they could resist a whole winter? I think those tyres make anybody pretty damn invincible on snow
Thanks

availibility should be no problemm why it should be? and they resist over ten thousand miles if you keep tire pressure good (check monthly)

my C32 had Hakkapeliitta 2 tyres and newest model is Hakkapeliitta 5.
if you want REALLY good handling on snow/ice and you dont care handling on dry roads, its time to order them

if you want more information more about winter tyres just ask.
and sorry my bad english

i know i have hancook ice bear and when i had them on my sold 06 is350 they did a great job. now lets see how they do on c32 this winter. i am using 17" amg replica rims with the tires and it looks great imo. handling is not at par with summer tires but who wants hanling in snow we all want great grip and i think the hancook icebear does it all. i got them and the amg replicas 17" rims at discount tires. they used my tires and put them on the rims for free without loosing warranty on each tire. i only paid 500 for the rims thats all. there are local discount tires all around here so do a search at discounttires.com

What's the best choice of tire if you want minimal compromise of high speed and cornering performance to get light snow capabilities?

maybe we can get a group buy or something going for some winter tires.

I had good experience with the dunlop winter m3 tires on my 328i last winter. I was going to put blizzaks on my c230k but totalled it on the way to Tires Plus.

I also got Hankook Icebears last winter. They were 225/35-18s all the way around and I mounted them on TSW Bremmas. The new tires and rims cost just under $2000 cdn. The tires were really cheap compared to the Dunlops or Michelins that I was originally going to get. The money I saved on the tires allowed me to get better rims and I get tons of compliments for what are my winter rims! Had a foot of snow in 1 day at the end of winter last year and didn't get stuck once. Super happy with the tires.

Pirelli SnowSport tyres. but remember, snow capabilites are VERY VERY MINIMAL. these are best high speed tyres with M+S label. If you care how your car goes to snow or ice, dont think more, get Nokian Hakkapeliitta tyres.
RSi without spykes, 5 (five) with spykes.

And no, im not working to Nokian, just helping other carfreaks
