$1900 Fuel Pump?????????
Just got word from my local MB dealership (Tafel Motors, Louisvile, KY) that my 2002 C32 needs a new fuel pump. Of course it couldn't be a simple replace fuel pump with new one, but replace the entire fuel tank. Seems the fuel pump is an integral part of the fuel tank. Good engineering! The car has a whopping 35K miles. This may be my last Benz. I love the car, but $1900 dollars for a fuel pump replacement is JUST WRONG!!!!

...sounds like all labor. The MB techs are probably looking at their labor charts and adding pre-set time/labor charge needed to remove the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump.
Same think happened to me, when I had to replace the wiring harnesses in my dad's E320. Check out this thread awhile back as an example of excessive labor charges...

Curious what initial complaint was? Fuel gauge reading empty especially after filling tank? OR driveability problem. If it's an inaccurate fuel gauge. It probably needs just the fuel levels senders(yes both) replaced with updated parts. If the car won't run, there may be a problem within the tank that is not allowing transfer from one side of the tank to the other in which case it might need a new fuel tank. The level senders are a lot easier to replace undamaged using specialized tools, but can be replaced by yourself, just don't smoke while doing them. Hope that helps. Depending on the VIN of your car, the new pumps/level senders may also require recoding of the instrument cluster due to changes in the parts.

Removing the fuel tank can be done by two people and a few simple tools. Remember to use an extractor to empty the tank prior to removal, and disconnect your battery.

do you know this for a fact, or are guessing? i have been curious about the whole fuel tank issue for a while and am the kind of guy that would do it myself, but i don't want to go to all the trouble and then not have the car start...

The actual part number for this car is 203-470-34-94 with a list price of $1120(good profit part though). With diagnosis(2 hours?) and labor (1.8 hours - this is more than MB book time). That's about $450 at dealer rate. Do they also want to replace the other level sender? That would get you to $1900. High cost of part can be explained by its low production. Only used in AMG cars and has a higher flow rate than non-AMG cars.

To Matt@Revolution, initial problem was engine stopped while driving. Would not restart. I believe the diagnosis is correct. Service department is now talking with MB rep to see what MB can do. Maybe prayer is in order.

C32
If you STF you will find that this is a common problem with all C32s regardless of year. I've had mine replaced last year for the same exact problem. Before the car didn't start however, I would feel this sudden "lurch" or sometimes the engine would just rev but I wouldn't get any power.

2003 C32
I had my fuel pump replaced. They had to replace the entire gas tank. I know that they weren't trying to screw me over because it was warranty work. Would have been something like Cdn $3500 with the labor.

2004 c32, 91 GMC SYCLONE AND AN 08 CBR 600RR(MAN THIS THING IS FAST)
I REPLACED IT IN MINE MYSELF AND ITS NOT HARD AT ALL. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS REMOVE THE REAR SEAT UNBLOLT THE COVER UNDER THE PASSANGER SIDE AND UNSCREW THE TOP THATS ON THE TANK AND THE REST IS SELF EXPLANATORY. I REPLACE THE SENDING UNIT AND THE PLUG ON THE DRIVER SIDE ALSO. I PAID ABOUT 850.00 FOR THE PUMP 250.00 FOR THE SENDING UNIT AND 30 FOR THE PLUG. IF I HAD TO DO IT AGAIN I'D DO THE PLUG FIRST. REASON IS AFTER I REPLACE THE SENDING UNIT THAT DIDNT FIX THE PROBLEM THEN I DID THE PUMP AND THAT DIDNT FIX IT EITHER AND GUESS WHAT IT WAS THE PLUG. I REPLACED THE PLUG AND SO FAR ALMOST A YEAR LATER NO PROBLEMS. LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED THE PART #'S AS I HAVE THE MB BOXES WITH THE OLD PARTS.
