notice i was able to splice the bigger sl55 cold air intake tube neatly to the stock c32's. the right tube is disconnected to show. i will finish up the joint with carbon fiber tape in spring.

i also thermo insulated the underside of the sl55 boxes. they sit right above the cylinder heads, which as you know, aint one of the coolest spots on the car!

the full sl55 intake allows more supercharger sound to escape and adds more power, especially noticeable on low end. this was the 1st mod i did and i really liked it as a stand alone. at part throttle the car sounds a bit like my f355.

Nice job man! Congrats! Did you get the parts from an MB dealer? (there's a thread somewhere listing about 6 parts) and all you need to give the parts dept is a VIN?

Congrats, looks good....... is there any chance you took more pics of the process. Are you going to leave the front cover off for good ?

I would like to do this mod also, but the threads explaining how to do it do not have the piccies any more

Looks good. I may need to get some 'thermotec' insulating material to protect my carbon fiber overlays and hood. But, I might also be using a full carbon fiber intake from the V8K. Depends on how much room there is between the throttle body and the firewall. Where can you get thermotec cheap?

thanks but it was an easy job. the hard part was changing plugs when the intake was off!

i did have to trim some metal from right side of cam cover - the insert slot for the oem intake box and had to cut the bit of plastic off box to clear the front oil fill cap. the only trick part was the right and left tubes don't splice into each other indentically. so i ruined one sl55 tube and had to replace ($15).

i used regular insulating wrap bought from home depot- the stuff for air ducts. seems to be holding up well. the oem cover does not line up with the 55 boxes anyway i want to see my little beast so the cover stays off.

I did have to supply a sl55 vin to facilitate ordering the boxes.

sorry no other pix. i got rid of my dvd camcorder and have not bought the replacement yet.

the glycol contamination issue has me a bit nervous. anyway - i have a new rad and lightening IC pump ready and i'm hunting down some clear fogs as the new headlites show up the old ones. once i get them i will have everything done when bumper is off. if the tranny fluid does not show glycol on analysis i will then hit the dyno but it may take another month. sorry to be verbose.

That AC duct insulation should do the job cheaply, but I just bought a bunch of Thermo-tec stuff during lunch. Expensive stuff. All to protect my CF parts from yellowing and getting damaged from excess heat.

Yeah, the SL55 filter housings, Y splitter and snorkles just 'bolt in", after a little trimming, persuasion, some parts left out.

When I bought the SL55, The Y splitter was on backorder for awhile, then I was told the three seperate pieces for the Y and hoses, now come as a unit, with a new part number, with hose clamps already crimped on the Y splitter. This is what I received in November 2006.

The Y splitter is a tight fit and the right side air filter housing does not quite
fit the prefitted hose, as well as it should. I trimmed around the oil filter, removed the clips on the bottom of air filter housings, since they don't line up. Also trimmed the the right side rear filter housing in the back where it hit a hose or harness.

I had to move the purge vaccum line to behind another hose and remove a few clips for clearance.

The intake snorkels had to be trimmed, since they are too long.

The engine cover clips into the air cleaner housing are in the wrong place and rotated 90degrees from where they should be.

Without the engine cover it is only 5 parts, only 5 different Mb part numbers, from the dealer, due to left/right side.

2-snorkles
1-Y splitter with hoses
2_airfilter housing (includes filters)

Plus need two 3.5" or 4" sewer size hose clamps.

Autotrader.com has vin numbers.

Which is a good idea, many people have been putting carbon fiber Renntech intakes on the E55, so there should be some used intakes out there, a lot cheaper than MB.

This is an older thread, but I came across it from a newer thread linked to this one. Anyway, for those looking at the full intake setup (I only have hose and splitter so far) I called the guy Mitch listed above and he said they still have 2 full intakes for sale. His initial quote was $600 for one and the other was $500. When I laughed and said they could be pieced together for about $400 he said he would beat any price and call me back with updated numbers. The ones he has for sale are used OEM parts, not carbon fiber or anything special.
So, for anyone wanting the full setup, Mitch still has some. I will post the price he quotes me as soon as he calls me back. I would guess they will go for around $200-$300.

its a grate install, i have does the same install my self.
but i took the Splitter off to make some adjustments and i noticed that the metel cip on the back wall of the engine compartment, was starting to cut through the hose, and if that happened i would loose air pressure in the car causing a lot of problems. so i too the SL55 splitter off and put the stock one back on. i'm going to relocate that clip or cover the new hose with a metal plate so the metal clip does not cut through the hose. take a look if the same thing is happening to your hose.

speedteknik is going out of business. Mitch's guy - Hew has set up shop in my town. Hew is an very good roadracer and has run worldchallenge with a neon srt. lookit him go- http://youtube.com/watch?v=z8MYGFF4I...e=user&search=

i would recommend Hew to anyone wanting work done to their car, he has done a number of e55K stage 2s and my c32 was the 1st. his # is 203 220 9265. actually i just dropped off my car for s/c bearing replacement.

offer Mitch $250!. tell him Cecil said not a penny more. that will **** him off an make me happy.

Harry just bend the tab in.

Score! If you can document ~10 HP on the dyno, or a tenth and a MPH at the digs, this tweak will be my next modification.

i get good tips from him! there's a chance i'll have him set up a e36 m3 track car for me next year.

he did the s/c bearing replacement for $100.

i like the sl55 box tweak. i think you pick up power but the sound is nice....stab the throttle at 20 mph in 3rd and the s/c sound is quite audible. nice.

Here's a link to a Crossfire member who had a stock SRT6 and did a before intake dyno run and after SL55 install dyno run. Gained 25 HP.

http://www.crossfireforum.org/forum/...5&postcount=36

I have this intake installed and find it to be a big improvement over the stock boxes (SRT6 and C32 are the same) - here is a link to my install.

http://www.crossfireforum.org/forum/...97&postcount=1

With the SL55 Intake (W/factory filters) - LET 185mm Pulley - Iridium Plugs - Dyno Tune - LET HE / CM30 Pump - Seperate coolant tanks - Resonator Delete - I consistantly make 360rwhp..... Looking to make 400rwhp.

The SL55 intake is 25% bigger - bigger intake tubes - bigger I/O ports on the airboxes -, bigger airboxes themselves (huge room between the filter and the bottom of the box for air to flow) - Bigger filter area (Sq. In.) - bigger throttle body Y-Pipe etc..

Big enough for a S/C AMG SL55 - big enough for my modified / boosted AMG3.2L V6.
