Some people may say "once you drive the M5, you cant really drive any other vehicle". I disagree...the M5's engine is high rev "F-1" style as it says....I dunno if its my provlem or what, but Im not a big fan of NA high rev cars...I like FI cars ! I mean the M5 will beat many cars...but the acceleration just doesnt feel as good as..

About the RS6, I have just seen some vids ...it's quick on initial acceleration but it seems that it loses steam as it reaches around like 90 MPH...can an ECU upgrade fix this problem? Can a chipped RS6 beat a stock E55?
Stay away from the '03 E55s. You'll need to find someone to retrofit the COMAND and NAV and as Cyn stated the older models do not have the updated steering rack. Go find an 05 up

By the way, does your gf drive a silver M5 with Eisenmann exhaust (AMG style tips)? I remember driving behind an M5 one early Saturday morning in the fall.

Interesting point. I didn't realize that early W211 models had rack & pinion steering. I thought that MB had done away with this type of steering with the exception of the CLK models. How noticeable is the difference when driving an 03 E55 vs. and 05 model?

Get the one which its handling is better, both cars have more than enough power for someone coming from a C32.

My ex-cars: 03 E55,04 C32, 05 C55 ,03 E320
Her M5 pretty much is stock. (no aftermarket exhaust). I installed a ham radio in her car and it has a huge antenna sticking out on top of the car..so if you see an asian guy with spikey hair driving..wave to me! if you see an asian girl, you dun have to wave to her =P

Is the 03's really that bad in terms of steering? because 05's are out of my budget.....

In the weekends, you'll likely see me on Cummington St. so if you see a Hong Kong guy with semi-long hair, that's me

You can always do the upgrade later. I believe Vic55 has the upgrade done at Evosport.

I would go drive an 03 and an 05 to see the difference. I personally was shocked to see the difference.

It is not just the steering rack. The front lower control arm bushings were different, the shocks are different and the steering rack is quicker (with better steering bushings).

Those together make the 05 worthy of a look. You can do an upgrade on these parts but control arms are oh 800 bucks and then each shock is 1400 bucks etc.

05's are getting cheap so keep your eyes open.

Well the E55 is far more enjoyable once you have the new steering. I have the old and it is like wood. It is SO heavy, so dead, and just plain slow. You need so much more input to make the E55 turn vs. my 2007 E350 daily driver $350 a month car.

If you enjoy driving, get the RS6, you need to be a much better driver to keep up with RS6 in a E55 on twisty roads.

If you prefer cruising and straight line performance, including beeing fastest on the motorway. Go E55.

To be fair to the RS6... You shouldn't be asking this questions in the MB forum....

Actually E55 feels slower in the top end due to its watercooled IC..

some people might not agree but that's how I felt..

and problem with RS6 is passenger side low IC hose that pops out often due to its design. IC hose has to come out to change oil..

both are nice car, but I would go AUDI if you have snow in your state other wise go for E55.

If I were on a E55, the RS6 won't make it to the twisty roads.

i say get the e55, you can squeeze much more hp out of the sc'ed v8 with some simple proven working bolt on mods. then, get the e63 front bumper and some new wheels.

In truth, you can squeeze more HP out of a turbo'ed V8 with a software upgrade. No bolts, no mods.

i think the e55 has a boost relief (blow off) for higher rpms. (my theory for 516ft lbs down low is the s/c being essentially overdriven). look into wetteraur chips. i think their stage one chip is 510ps, 592 ft lbs they may be able to hold more boost at the higher rpms. http://www.wetterauer.de/
