You can unplug the air pump and won't have a problem. It may or may not make the CEL go out. Have you checked the code to see if you still have the Secondary Air Injection causing the CEL. You can also check the relay to see if the contacts look burnt.

I had this problem at the time of the recall, the relay failed and burnt out the pump, the advice I was given is:
1) See if MB will cover its replacement under "Factory Assistence", the pump alone costs $800.
2) If you don't get it replaced then eventually you will poison your cats but that can take 10-20K miles.
