Vadim - have you thought about changing resistance of IAT

You have stated in your superb write-ups about the intercooler that High IAT temps are retarding the timing. Would it be possible to change the value of of the IAT sensor(add resistance in series) to fake the ECU into thinking the IAT is lower than it is?

My thinking is that we have a switch that adds this resistance in series, so that we can run race gas and more timing. A performance ECU will still only have enough timing advance to run 91 octance fuel. This would be a way to get more HP at the track.

What do you think? Is it worth testing?

Thanks, Tim

Yes, I have tried it. It did not work. DME is very smart. When you exceed certain value it throws AIT fault and goes in limp home mode.

So does this mean we will always be limited to an ECU that is tuned for 91 octane pee water? It would be nice to be able to add another 30hp or so when using race gas.

What it means, is that you will need software to add substantial timing advance. Renntech software runs 22 degrees at WOT, vs. 12-14 stock. Extra timing adds about 15-20HP at the wheels. However, as boost is increased extra much timing will require higher octane.

Nothing is simple, this is why it is called tuning.

YOu have to find the right ammount of resistance, but it will work. I have done this before on many cars. Some aftermarket turbo kits, and supercharger kits come with a set up that fools the computer so that it will run richer and change the timing. It takes some real testing, but it is simple. This is just a short cut though. You have to find out why the IAT is higher, and fix that.
