Update on my Oil Consumption issue

It was confirmed by the oil consumption test that my C55 had consumed more than 2 quarts of oil in 900 miles.... My car currently has 47,000 miles and I do that the extended warranty coverage to 100K miles... Anyways, though I requested that the engine be replaced, they are doing head gasket work.. I don't feel comfortable having a local Benz tech doing work on a motor which was put together by a skilled AMG tech...

An SLK350 owner had his motor replaced after repeated oil consumption tests:
https://mbworld.org/forums/slk-class-r171/115133-problem-slk-update.html

I'm guessing that they won't replace my motor because my car is now 3 years old with 47K miles....

Eric

The M272 engine is known to have oil consumption issues in the first 10k miles so the factory is more prone to just replace the motor off the bat. The C55 is not as prone to this issue so they might take their time. Trouble is, they will do head work, and have you limp along until 50k and at that point the warrenty changed to extended and I bet they get even more cheap.

I would push for a new motor. I know they will do it. I have had it done several times and miles really dont affect the replacement. When at 98k miles they might try to patch the issue but that motor should be FINE at 47k.

Keep me posted. Call if u need any helo dealing with the reps etc.

My C55 has been in the shop since Monday of last week and they are waiting on a head gasket as well as 8 new Pistons from AMG.

I took pride in the fact that a skilled AMG tech put together my motor, but now I feel robbed in that the major work being performed is by a local mb service tech....

why are they replacing the head gaskets and pistons??? Most oil consumption is a function of the rings or the valve guides.

Maybe you can get the local technician to sign another plaque and put that next to your current maker plaque.

Seriously, I don't know how pistons can have anything to do with oil consumption. Rings maybe, but not pistons. Maybe they would rather replace them as a unit (rings+pistons). The worst part is that you don't have your car. I hate when they take a car apart, then order the parts and make you wait.

I sent both MB or North America and AMG a letter expressing my dismay and got the following response:

----
I just got the WSG approval for complete engine replacement this morning.
The engine has been ordered, it is in Robbinsville and should be here
Monday. If all goes smoothly the car should be completed by Tuesday pm.

What signs and symptoms were you having to make you notice the oil consumption. Did the computer tell you to add more oil?

Eric,
Since they are going to replace the motor are they going to extend your warranty?

Well, I just picked up the car.... The crate motor didn't come with the motor cover, so they used the old one and the dual intake pipes are the same... Everything else is brand new.... If they had changed the motors without me knowing, I would never know the difference aside from that new engine smell, which is what my garage smells like...

Congrat! I'm glad everything worked out for ya..
"
During the first 1000 miles, do not exceed a speed of 85MPH.
During this period, avoid engine speeds above 4500 rpm in each gear. "

Straight out from da manual~

I used to race 2 stroke and 4 stroke dirt bikes and snowmobiles. ALL our engines were broke in this way....from the factory or a new full on open mod crate motor. Dyno has proven over and over again that the "hard" break in was better. I can't help but think it would work for bigger auto engines as well.
Congrats on the new motor and everything working out regardless!
