Aftermarket navi in a place of ashtray

Have anyone considered installing an aftermarket navigation system in a place where ashtray is located on C55? We're talking about roughly 3" of space so you can easily pick up a unit that is 3"x5" (such as tomtom) out there. Obviously it would not be using car speakers for audio but it would definitely look better than having it on a the windshield...

Any thoughts?
Kris

Someone has done it. There's a step by step install with pictures on the C-class forum.

that's a bit low though. I didn't put my V1 remote display there even though I wired it to do just that. Looking that far down is not a good idea while driving.

There are some posts in C section about install of Pioneer Avic D3. Looks pretty good.

Thanks. I'll do the research. Perhaps I'll take it to local electronics store (Abt) to see what they suggest. These guys can do wonders.

The research has all been done. It's all in the C-class forum. There are step by step installs on both the ash tray install and also 2DIN retrofits.

You could take out the cigg lighter if you want to put it in the ash tray. Mercedes itself also offers a standalone navi that clips into the air vents. If you want to replace your factory stereo with an aftermarket navi, that AVIC thread is pretty good, although the DIY is for a prefacelift without premium sound. The C-class forum has all the answers for navi.
