Ok I have heard but have huge doubts about the full senthetic oil called royal purple being able to increase hp due to how effective it is at keeping things lubricated....chime in guy all pros and cons are welcomed.

can your butt dyno detect a 1% increase in power? even if claims are true?

silkolene electrosatic cling 0w20 will get you the most power through less drag but, you nor i will want to use in the benz.

I'm sure their "stats" are based on a best-case scenario. They found a 1989 Buick Roadmaster running a blend of Sears 20W50 oil and sludge, and they changed to their 0W40 oil, and picked up some HP. If you already use good oil of the right viscosity, I doubt that there's a lot to be gained.

I was an Amsoil fan and ran it in my cars and boat; but have recently started shopping at the local auto store for Mobil 1 0W40 (for the Benz and TT) and good old Castrol GTX 10W40 or 20W50 for the 944.

Stay away from 0 weight oils! these oil are SM rated oils!. The reason we went to this oil was the goverment and every tree hugger in california found out that if you reduced the sulfer and some other key stuff by 50% in the oil the car is more "efficient" at start up. However th oil is not as good as the SL rated oils. Things have gotten soooo bad with engine failers with this oil that the goverment has given all the heavy machinery companys (peterbuilt, detroit diesle) ect and extension on using sm rated oils till 2010 or until they figuere something out . Mobil has a (refomulated) oil which is crap its a sm oil! these oils are about 50% less effective at protecting your car and dont lasts as long. If you do go to this oil please change it every 4500 miles or so. Guys this is not the oil you used to think you had. I used royal purple 10w40 and it works great. If you want to stay with mobil then try the 10w40 diesle its still a sl rated oil.

Hey Mikegpr03,

I don't know half of the terms you're using in your warning post... but I do know that Mobil 1 synthetic 0w40 is one of about a dozen (or so) oil types and weights that are on MB's "approved oil" list, which I've used in my C230 Coupe without any problems for about 150k miles, and my C32 for a little over 30k miles without any problems... so, in layman's terms, why should we stay away from 0 weight synthetics...? IMHO, I don't see them as harmful, but what I do know... I'm certainly no expert.

It's all marketing hype anyway. I do trust Mobil and feel comfortable with the 0-40W oil. It looks really good when I pour it into the crankcase, ha!

I am not a mechanic so please tell me why you wouldn't recommend using it in a Benz?

thanks all good info. the jeep we just got is supposed to run 0w20. i plan on keeping it forever so will look at alternatives for oil as the 1st oil change is coming up.

i'm changing the mobil 0w40 at 5000 miles now. will prob go a bit thicker next spring through summer and may change to one of the premium oils- amsoil / red line / silkolene / motul........

prob best to select an oil based on protective qualities vs possible power advantages. no sense trying to go for a small gain in the latter area but incur expensive engine damage long run.

To put it in simple terms the new 0type oils have less of the good stuff you want in the oil because "enviromental issues". Do some reading up on this guys. Just my 2cents.

I remember seeing something on Horsepower TV where they did indeed post some horsepower and torque gains. Here is the link.

http://www.royalpurple.com/rp-videos.html

Yea you might not feel the difference but it is there. That was wheel horsepower too.

i have to figure out something for track days. i'm thinking 1q each of royal purple max cycle 20w50 and 10w40 mixed with mobil 0w40 or a cheaper synthetic and change right after an event. if i run redline regularly then i could extract it before event and put back in after. no way am i running mobil 1 0w40 on the track anymore..........

0w20 is recommended for our Acura MDX. I'm not sure that I would substitute my judgment for that of Honda. 0W20 sounds mighty "thin" but if that's what they say to use, they must have better data than my general "sense."

i use RP in my Evo 8.... its such a low increase in power that you can't feel or even notice it.
but i do feel like the car(evo that is) runs a lot smoother with it than just mobile 1 but that could be my personal pref. i also you RP in everything from my tranny & transfer case to my powersteering

Although I am impressed with Royal Purple, I would've liked to see what other brand they tested in their video. It is hard to draw conclusions when some data is missing. I mean, that could be a very cheap, crappy oil that was compared to their top-of-the-line one.

I wish a magazine would do an intensive review (and tests) on all these top brand oils, and publish the results

i think their tests ( even though not stated or am i 100% positive) are done compared to conventional oils...

I'm almost positive it is a quart of Mobile1 that has black tape over the lable. (old design bottle from a few years ago) At least that what it looks like to me.

No, I'm not so sure, as I've seen other oils with that exact same bottle
