Removed Green and returned to K&N

I bought my car late 2004...

back then my knowledge for MB cars was as bad as me trying to explain Rugby Football.

My first mods were Green Filters and removed the resonator.

When I first installed them.. I noticed some gaps and the fitment was not very good. This is an old problem for Green filters and probably has been fixed by now.

I always noticed the gap and how they sat deep in the box and did not sit up high. (Creates less volume of air in the boxes)

This past week end I was going to clean them once more, and really made me think how I'm sufficating the engine.

visited by nearby parts store, bought the K&N's and by the next day there were installed.

The box had a nice installation guide with photos and even a small rubber gasket to help with the fitting. I think I paid $120 for my green filters and $90 for my K&N's.

I can tell you I know my cars behavior very well and Its breathing healthy again. Throttle response a bit nice and pulls are a bit harder.

Still can't make the transmission kick down fast (unless you have a sprint booster) but the power is there once you hit the kick down button.

I'll be doing a transmission fluid next, maybe it will help the transmission to react sooner.

If you have Green filters and they don't fit exactly how they should... you probably better off with stock filters.

Good catch, TopGun32.

Some are pleased with the Greens; others not so much…https://mbworld.org/forums/showpost....2&postcount=63

specially for those that have the bigger 55 air boxes ... why have been air boxes if your filters are creating more turbulance than flow.

just food for thought.

I'm putting back my resonator. I just have this bug that tells me that I'm loosing a bit of back pressure under 2900 rpms (when kompressor is dormant)

even if the resonator is basically a straigh pipe with noise reduction material, I think the volume of gases it holds helps the engine.

more on this later this week.

i'm glad i went with the K & N. I've always had K & N's on my other cars and have always been happy with the fit and finish of them.

I have nothing bad or anything against the Green filters....I definitely can say that the K&N are built tougher and fit like a glove compared to the Greens but I have yet to experience what bad things occurred to others with the Greens. I swap out from Greens to K&N to Greens every 3k miles since I have noticed them pretty dirty at that time on 2 occassions.

Nice post, Splinter! For the record I first ran K&Ns then Greens on my W208 CLK430. The K&Ns fit like stock and did not melt, but the Greens stuck out like that; I think it had something to do with "trimming" the plastic to make the fitlers fit. Urgh.

So with my W209 CLK55, I decided to go back to K&Ns. They fit perfectly and the car feels much more crisp and throttle response is great. Plus, now I can pull "chirps" again!

The K&Ns are great and the oil was never a problem on my CLK430. I think people only get into trouble when they clean the filters themselves and over-oil them afterwards!

not sure why Green filters command a premium over K&N's?

some have tested the filters to perform better.. but I rather have quality over performance.

i have the Green. doesn't have the fit problem described. works fine. i may try out k&n later on just for the heck of it. my brother has the k&n on his e39 528i and it's been strong for 130k miles.
