Brake pad sensor question

So I think I'm going to order a set of Akebono brake pads from Tirerack. Since my old set isn't worn down yet, is it possible to re-use the brake wear sensors from the OEM set?

This is not what your mechanic would answer: yes. I have pulled and re-used sensors that did not ground out yet. It is cheap to replace though, as each sensor costs about $6. I'd get new ones eventually.

Yeah that's what I figured. I just didn't want to have to order new sensors if TireRack didn't carry the right sensors for our cars.

Just for information's sake, do you know how many sensors our car has?

My car is also a 2002 and has two sensors only; both on the right side. However, I have heard of some 2002 models having 3 sensors.

ScottW911 is right, you can reuse them. However, I recommend you get at least 2, because if you are not careful enough while pulling the sensors, you can break the little leg that goes into the pad. I changed my pads about a month ago and I broke the one at the front but got to reuse the one in the rear. Also, do a visual inspection on your rear pads, you are more than likely in no need to replace them yet.

I ordered the rear Akebono brake pads and there was a new set of sensors that came with the pads.

Don't be surprise if they are the incorrect ones...

My box also came with sensors, only to find out they were for the xfire srt6.

they are not the correct ones. i did my brakes a few weeks ago and they are the wrong sensors.

i had trouble getting the stock sensors into the akebono pads so I just zip tied them out of the way. Better solution that trying to jam them in and risk breaking them. you may have better luck but the plastic was bending and i was not going to risk breaking them.

Good to know. I haven't put them on yet.

True.

Use a hammer and gently knock the sensor into the pad once you install the pads into the caliper. This should be your last step.

I had read, here, that the C32 had 2 sensors. My mechanic, that sold me the sensors, said it was 3 and sold me 3. Turned out that MBWorld was the correct source for the information. I lost one of the sensors before I got it home so it turned out to be a good thing I purchased 3.

anyone know if the same applies to a C55 also? 2 sensors in which position? rear passenger? i'm under the impression the the brakes and rotors on a C55 and C32 are identical.

They are identical but just cover your basis and get 4 sensors. You really just need one sensor at the front and one at the rear (assuming the pairs are replaced at the same time). All that the sensor does is measure the pad wear and send a signal when it's comes down to 20% left.

I guess I'll just order new sensors along with them to be safe. Hopefully Tirerack sends the right ones, I'll probably call and make the order to be sure. Thanks for the info guys!

tire rack is just gonna send the box of pads with the sensors in it. they are not gonna know if it's right or wrong and even if they are wrong they are not gonna source it out for you. It's the manufacturer that packaged the wrong ones.
