Water Pump Cover DIY - idler pulley seized up!!!
My C32 threw the belt the otehr day, and it turned out to be the infamous "idler pulley". I thought the ticking noise was the SC pulley, and I was saving $$$ for a smaller performance SC pulley because they come with the bearings already pressed in. BIG MISTAKE!!! The idler pulley was the culprit, and finally seized up, and distroyed the mount that is part of the water pump cover. I have searched everywhere on the internet, butr can't find any DIY tips for removing/installing a new cover. It doesn't look too complicated, but would like to know if there are any tips, pictures, etc that anyone has that will help me with this procedure?
Can I replace just the cover or do I have to replace the entire Water Pump?

Anyone have any tips/pics for this? I don't want to screw this up... I am thinking it is justthe pulley bolts and case bolts, and the whole thing will fall off with a little hit from a rubber mallot. Does that sound right? Should I do this myself, or shoud I take it to a shop?

To clarify: The idler pulley that failed, completely seized up causing stress on the pulley so much that it chewed a huge chunk of metal off of the pulley mount. That pulley mounts to the casing of the "water pump". I bought a new pulley, but because the mount is chewed up, it won't sit properly. I have determined that I will have to replace the water pump cover. My question is "what are the steps to replace the WP cover?". I haven't seen any DIY pics or steps here for that. I can't be the only one this has happened to.

I can't recall the idler pulley mount you are referring to, but I have changed the water pump on mine. Not hard to do - the alternator mounting bolt passes through it, so will need to come off. The bolts securing the pump are of varying lengths, so make a note of where they fit. Pretty easy really, no need to remove the radiator or anything big.

How much is a new Water Pump?
Should I get a new WP from the Stealer, or are there other sources that are cheaper?
PS - I have been driving around since this happened with a new pulley after filing and reshaping the mount the best I could with no real issues or thrown belt. The pulley is even cocked a little and the belt doesn't ride on the pulley perfectly (only 60% of the belt is on the pulley). I really need to install a new WP. Everytime I gun it, I say a little prayer...

This is directly off of my recent invoice from an independent MB specialist shop:
The grooved guide pulley to the left of the S/C pulley is part # 120 200 04 70 - just bought one for $55
New WP is 112 200 13 01- 88 - it was $277.59 with core exchange
Just happened to have the invoice right in front of me, given this week's MBW activity

C32 AMG Water Pump alternatives
So far, I have been able to run for eight months without throwing the belt or any worn parts (as far as I can tell). I even have the Code3 SC pulley on, and was hammering it over the weekend. Well, I finally ordered a new Water Pump from RockAuto (CARDONE SELECT Part # 5583333 (55-83333) for 187.79). If anyone knows of a thread that has a good DIY writeup with pictures of R&I of the Water Pump, I would be much obliged...

Sorry it took so long to reply, but YES! It worked out perfectly, and never had any issues. I had it installed by a local shop that really didn't work on MB cars, and was a bit reluctaant to attempt the install, but all is good. I sold thje C32 and upgraded to an E55 July of last year. The C32 was running stong with no issues with over 80k on the ODO (other than the tranny jerk around 1500rpm in stop and go traffic.)

On a new note, how's the E55? That certainly is an upgrade and would be my logical choice as a next Merc. For now though the C32 is just perfect
Happy driving!
