Jag Off stole my Garmin Nuvi

Had my car window cracked open today to let out heat (Black cars are a BIT** in summmer). Anyway, someone reached in and stole my $600 GPS unit and the FM receiver I had attached to it for traffic alerts. Some jag-off got a nice unit. Hope you crash you Bast*** Word of advice, 1. Close your windows and lock the car and take unit off of windshield. 2. Insure the unit. I did and thankfully so, my insurer (SF) already sent me a check after I gave them the police report. Class company for sure!! Cops said they are stealing 5-10 of these a week now!!!! Woo hoo!!! Class company for sure!!! They also insure my 9500iX and thats coming out everynight!!!

So you lost something, you got a check for MSRP and now you can buy it under MSRP or learn to use a map and not require GPS and save yourself $600. You got a refund basically without your rates increasing I am assuming becuase you wouldn't be so happy if they did. I don't see what the problem is. If I were you I would kind of be happy.

Sorry to hear that. There are some real assh**** out there. Besides removing my GPS and windshiled mount I also wipe off the mark on the windshield the GPS holder leaves. Around here people were breaking into any cars they could see where a GPS was mounted. They break in and hope it is just hidden in the car.

Thank god you have insurance.

Yeah, I honestly never leave anything in sight, even garbage. Then again that comes from growing up in Oakland cause windows don't stop people here!

But yeah in addition to that, if you're going to crack the windows, just barely leave room for a finger and flip up the sunroof like Temjin said. Doesn't hurt to tint the windows too and put up the rear sunshade.

(in my best Larry the Cable Guy voice) I don't care who you are- that's funny right there.

Sorry to hear about your luck though. State Farm has always taken good care of me also. They had better though- I have 2 cars, a bike, and a house insured with them

If you left your window "cracked" enough for someone to reach their arm all the way in and steal your Garmin, it sounds more like you left your window 1/3 of the way rolled down. Either way, it's good you're covered for the loss.

I've learned to use the sunroof for heat ventilation. We have the option to leave the back of it popped up 2+ inches, and since heat rises, it works as a good vent. Also, I even keep the interior sunroof cover pulled closed when parking in sunlight since it too has vented slots allow the heat to escape through it and the sunroof when popped up in the back.
Just a thought for a better method of accomplishing your heat removal goal.

And, a word to the wise --- never leave anything of value visible inside the car. Lock it in the trunk! Laptops are the most common theft item now. I've had two co-workers "donate" theirs to someone by leaving them visible in the backseat and having a window smashed out or a door "jimmied" to steal 'em.

It's not just a state-side thing, I had two windows broken out on my lease VW in an underground car park at my hotel in Dublin. The rocket scientist yob missed a few things looking for my SatNav;

-Many cars have dead bolt locks that don't let you open a locked car from the inside.

-Just because you see a windshield mount doesn't mean the SatNav is in the car.

-If you're going to break two windows don't do it right next to two different CCTV cameras. The hotel management and Garda knew about the break-in before I did, not that it did anything to prevent it. Very impressive color and clarity too, not at all like the grainy shots you see on TV.

-Try not to cut yourself doing it. The Garda CSI-types were able to lift blood and fingerprints, not that it'll do any good.

Sorry to hear that man - stealing GPS units is the number 1 reason for breaking into cars in Ireland! Don't get me started on the Gardai in Dublin - all sorts of shenanigans going on right in front of their faces but too lazy to do anything about it. And yes, Dublin is terrible for having cars broken into.

No excuses, my stupidity!!! They got it, I dont have it and it was a costly lesson. Good news is this: I had it on Garmin "lock" with password and also had the FM receiver attached (which is on the cord they took) and thats been deactivated by Garmin, so they basically got a worthless unit. Its in a river somewhere on the bottom collecting barnacles. I called Garmin and they told me the lock is basically "undefeatable." Woo hoo!! Lesson learned here.

Sorry Dude

I heard in Chicago they are stealing portable Nav units left and right. Now next time just put it all away cause a closed window could mean a broken window if they know you have it.

Glad you got the money for it. I use my crappy Magellan over my installed NAV all the time. My wife keeps telling me to remove and put under the seat or just bring in the house. At $149, I think nobody would take it....probably can't give it away.

Yepper, I do. Will go with another Garmin in a heartbeat, since they are better than Magellan in mapping, features etc. Costco has a great deal on a high end one right now.
