smoke from under hood and burning smell
I had a puff of white smoke come ouf from under the hood the other day, and there is a burning smell everytime i drive the car at the moment. I have isolated it as comming from the gap at the back of the engine, just between the SL55 splitter and the battery box. Any ideas on what may be burning in this area ?
Coulld it be the bigger SL55 splitter touching something and getting burned ?

Have you tried to take the engine cover off and look? There is a seal ontop of the engine between the valve cover and the recirculating valve cover that tends to break/leak. As a result oil will slowly leak down along the valve covers ( sometimes all over the coil packs/ignition wires ) and onto the headers resulting in a burning smell. Take off the engine cover and have a look!

did it give off a sweet smell? usually if the smoke is white and gives off a sweet smell its coolant burning. If the smoke is usualy more blue its usually oil.

A common problem with this motor. Take a look at your exhaust manifolds / headers (whichever you have) and see if they are stained. See if there is an oil stain leading down to them.

So I do what mercedes advised and get the gaskets ect replaced ...... drove down the road and the smoke is still there, and getting worse.
I have tracked it down to coming up from, when you are looking at the engine, under the RHS exhaust collector, and it seems to puff when I change it from N to D, so I assume there is some sort of transmission fluid leak onto the exhaust .... am taking it back tomorrow.
