I'd say stick with 265 or skinnier, and if you need more traction switch to a stickier brand (e.g. Hoosiers or M/T's) - obviously, I'm really new to this, but logically that's what I'd do at least. If someone has fit a 275/40-17 to their C32 without any bodywork, I'd like nothing more than to be wrong about this...
Hey c32AMG:

YES you can mount a 275/40/17 on a 8.5 rim. It would NOT work for road raceing as the tire would roll over WAY too much around bends, but for draggin, if it clears the fenders, everything would be fine. If you check the tires spec sheet, you will see that it calls for a 8.5-10.5 rim. I used this combo on my 91 stang for the strip, aka 275 BFG DR, on a ROH 17 x 8.5. Worked great at the drags, was quite the riot on the road course, aka I have pictures of it rolling over a few inches left or right depending on which way I turned. Just had to try it, but alas it REALLY didn't work, at Nelson Ledges.

See yeah

all I can say is practice practice practice. my runs in the srt-10 went from high 13's to low low low 12's with practice. I never broke 11's though I ran 12.0 several times on bone stock tires.

I have yet to run my c55 at the track. I ran my caliber at the track, and it ran 13.7 - 14.3 and the c55 on the street walks the caliber every time.

I'm late to the party but I will echo what everyone here says:

1) Dyno the car
2) Practice
3) Make sure the car is cool before each pass

Good luck!
