san francisco, 280 southbound, sl black series dealer plates?

now im sure most everyones seen the two gtr with dealer tags drag racing incident. people were quick on the draw and speculated this and that.

turned out to be a guy that DID in fact purchase two gtrs and before breaking it in, took it to the track.

fine

BUT im driving home today and i see what looks like a wide body sl. oh wait. its a black series. holy crap i think. i try to get closer but im stuck in some traffic.

it was silver, driver unknown, but short and blonde (i believe to be a female with short hair.)

but my thing is this. it had dealer plates. does this mean someone working at the dealer is taking out a SL BLACK SERIES FROM THE LOT to use as their driver? ive heard of this happening from lexus dealership buddies, courtesy drivers at the local benzs dealerships have told me the same..... ive seen some e320s driven around town with dealer plates....

BUT A SL BLACK SERIES?!?!? for "personal" use?

i would be pissed as hell if i found out people at the dealership sold me this car and didnt tell me someone was driving it for personal use. i really wonder if the dealers disclose this when they sell the cars?

im not sure if im using the right term here. when i meant dealer plates i mean the metal license plates that have vertical numbers (letters?) on one side, large horizontal numbers.

i couldnt tell, not sure if you can infact tell which dealership it is from these plates, but it WAS coming on 280 southbound from 6th street.

i know i might be wrong, but arent these plates just plates the dealership has laying around and throws on any cars so that they can drive them around? i like i said in the original post, i see e320s around with them all the time.

this was a sl black series! i mean, damn, thats one expensive loaner car to use.

In California, the Manufacturer and Distributor plates look very similar to the Dealer license plates. You have to look carefully to read the "mfg" (something like that abbrevieation) or "dist", spelled out vertically on the left side of the plate.

I'd guess the one you saw had "dist" on the plate.

You see quite a few in Southern California. Most of the manufactures have design centers set up in and around Orange County. Usually foreign companies carry the Distributor plates, while the domestics have Manufacturer plate. I usually see Chryslers around here, with the Manufacturer plates.

IIRC, a lot of pre-release testing goes on in CA... from what I've heard, sharp-eyed car enthusiasts can occassionally see models being driven around before they've actually hit the dealers

You would be correct. I saw the current SL63 running around 6 months prior to launch. The Maybach Excelon was spotted on many occasions a year or so ago. The list goes on and on.
