6-Speed Availability

Does anyone have a definitive answer on whether there will be a six speed available? If so, when will it be introduced?

There ARE NO plans to have a 6-Speed available in ANY AMG vehicle in the near future.

you won't see any 6-speed automatic transimission box from Mercedes-Benz any time soon either.

How about the 2003 C320 sedan? The 6 speed is standard now.

??

Anyone know who makes manual tranny for MB? How come MB never uses their manual tranny on AMG cars? (something I couldn't figure out.) For most of the time, the C32's autotran performs flawless. It's just that one moment on the freeway when I'm trying to go from 75 to 100mph, the throttle response acts like a typical autotran (sluggish). I remembered folks mentioned some sort of tunning to improve the response... was it the pully upgrade?

unlike BMW, Audi, VW and Jaguar who bought their automatic transimisson from ZF, Mercedes-Benz choose to design their own transimission box.

however, their technology is a little bit behind compare with ZF, that's why even though we saw a lot of 6-speed automatic transimission equipped cars on various model from those manufacturers, Mercedes-Benz still isn't seccessful introducing the 6-speed auto.

the VISION SLR that's suppose to launch next year (2004) won't get the 6-speed either!!

sad

Jag had just started to use gearbox from ZF. On my dad's 96 XJ-12 it has a GM 4 speed auto. I remember they had used MB's gearbox couple years back (correct me if i'm wrong thx)

I understand the 6spd gearbox will save gas at high speed and has more top end speed, but is it really necessary? I mean although SMG is different than the regular auto, My friend's M3 won't go into 6th gear in the auto mode when he is cruising around 50.

yes, i think it is.

not that you can't drive without one. but these days, you can never have enough of techonology that saves fuel!

if you can have a 6-speed automatic that will save you some gas, and potentially improve the performance of the car, why not?!

it's not like you are going to only cruise at 50mph anyway.

by the way, BMW used to use 5-speed auto from GM 2 years ago as well.

so my old 2000 328Ci Steptronic had the GM trans?...damn wish i didn't know that. And i thought it was ZF Also, i thought that GM has no 5 spd auto, that's why Corvette is still using 4 spd auto.

yes, i think you might have the gearbox from GM instead of ZF.

as a matter of fact, GM is actually pretty damn good in making automatic transmission box!!

C32 AMG
The GM 5-spd probably can't handle the torque of the Corvette (either that or GM had temporarily agreed not to use it in any of their cars). I'm not really sure, but now the Cadillac CTS has it. BTW, the Jaguar XJR that my friend has indeed uses a Mercedes box.

Based on an article read a while back, Mercedes says that only roughly 5% of AMG buyers wanted a manual transmission. In terms of the C32, with around 1000 cars being shipped annually to the U.S., it isn't cost effective to provide the training, equipment, supplies, etc. to repair 50 cars. It makes alot of sense.
