Get off my lights...

Get off my lights...
Anyone else notice the algae/mildew film accumlating on your headlights making them dull and yellow? I'm not sure exactly what causes this stuff... I'm thinking a combination of water, pollen, time, and other scientific factors.
I noticed this stuff on my buddies Acura, Lexus, and my Benz. I had some blue magic liquid with a buffer which did very little for us. It seemed to help on the Lexus a bit. Was thinking about maybe some fine sandpaper and then the buffer.
Any suggestions to clean this or how it can be avoided??

its mostly caused by UV damage from the sun. You can use meguiars plastic X to get rid of most of the yellow. If its still there, you need to sand it off. You can keep your head lights from developing the yellow by using hte plastic X or just simply waxing your head light.

I'll probably head to autozone to look for a restoration kit 2morrow and give it a little elbow greese. I planned on replacing my black projectors and get something more of the chromed look to match the rims put on recently.

Some cars have a layer of protectant applied at the factory on their composite headlights so if you start buffing, you will have to strip that protectant layer off (basically a clear coat applied to the outside of the lense) before making progress on the lense itself. There are several commercial operations that will polish and recoat the lense. I'd check with the local dealer or a few detail shops to find out who they recommend / use. Its a fair amount of work with the potential for really poor results if you aren't methodical about it.

some 2000-1500 grid sand paper and water will do the job.. finish it off with the power ball, some headlight wax and polish them every 3 months or so..
