C32 Smog Pump - Issue

Question to the forum:

When you have problems with the C32 secondary air injection system (aka: smog pump) what has been the usual faulty part??

Friday, I stopped for dinner and the smog pump (air injection pump on passenger side front of engine bay near the intercooler water pump), was running after I shut off engine and pulled out key and locked door. It ran for ~10 min and stopped. I was never able to duplicate the issue and supected a faulty control relay?? The pump seemed to still kick on when the key was turned as normal.

The next day I was working on other things with the car and late in the day it refused to crank (battery low). Charged battery and it was fine and that has not repeated including a two day trip to Columbus on business Sun-Mon.

However, on the way home I get a yellow check engine light. Pulling the code, I see that it is: "Secondary air injection system malfunction" I assume that is the smog pump. Any ideas?

Also, what is best method to reset the codes once fixed?

Don't hold me to this but, my understanding is that MB did the recall of those relays because they stuck and burned out the secondary air pumps.

Sounds like that just happened to you. Because of the cheap little relay, you now will need to spend the big $$ to have the pump replaced or spend hours trying boohoo's special DIY fix.

Thanks guys - The DIY link had all the info that I needed. The smog pump is clearly not working. I wish I had read that a week ago so that I could have pulled the relay and maybe saved the pump. Am still checking to see if pump is actually fried. New relay is on the way. Fuse was OK.

I find it sometimes maddening that these bloody cars can tell you specifically that the right rear upper brake light is burned out but when it is a $400 part on the line, all you get is a cryptic "Check Engine Light". I know that it is to preserve dealer business but still, looks like the damn code could display so we can react better.

Still many thanks! It is posts like this from other owners who have had similar relevent experiences that makes this board such a valuable resource to all of us.

I don't really understand the use of a non-amg pump as the non-amg one lists for $745.00 and the amg is $510.00 I am guessing it's easier to find at a junk yard? Anyways if you decide to get a new OE one send me a PM I could get a decent discount on one.

Irish,

You might want to check this out (I wrote this in some thread over a year ago)

There's a service campaign out for a faulty relay that causes the pump to short (Service Campaign #2006030011) They'll replace the relay and flash your ECU at no charge. Note that some guys have experienced throttle response issues after the ECU flash. Below is some info you might need that I got from one of the posts on here. There's plenty of info on this in the forum just do a search on "error code P0410" Good Luck! Just print the info below and give it to your dealer and they'll know what to do.

Relay

The link in AMG4Ever's first post above has all that. Pic's part numbers, the works. It was extremely helpful. The relay is under the hood on near firewall on driver's side in the relay & fuse box. It is purple.

It looks like I may have spoken too soon as my CEL came on again throwing the same code. Apparently my airpump is damaged, failing or only working intermittantly. I had reset the system and it worked for about 5 days. Reset again yesterday and it works again for now. I see a new airpump in my future. !@#$%^&*

Not sure if it the same on left hand drive cars, but on my rhd c32, when I had a similar problem to you - I replaced the relay and the pump with new MB parts (christ, the expense...), but continued to get occasional CEL throwing up. I traced the problem to a burned wiring connection in a multi way plug just loose in the top of the underhood fuse box. It was a transparent plug with about 5 wires each side. When I seperated the two parts of the plug the red wire connection was melted inside. Maybe worth a look see...

anyways i replaced the relay and noticed the pump turns off a lot sooner then it did before. Probably saved my self from buying a pump in the future. Thanks everyone.

..."Note that some guys have experienced throttle response issues after the ECU flash."...

someone just noticed a key issue here! everyone needs to collectively respond to this issue. Becaue i am a person not likely to tinker but i thought i was just me. But i have had serious throttleing issues sometimes either while on cruise control and just steady foot throttle. Also notice this when i am up-shfting and down shifting onto and off the USA highways, respectively. Its like some remote control just took over my car!!! i have immediately hard brake and pull over to the side slowly. I only had to shut down the engine once and while pulled over on a city shoulder.

I think this is a serious problem; luckily most high end performance car owners will know how to safely handle with this respective situation. But most lay-persons would already be involved in a accident, having NHSTA investigate these claims. i once was @ a intersection and had to quickly avoid and hard brake to not be in adverse mitigating circumstance.

The ECU should not be upgraded from my perspective because it is still occassionly buggy. Just the relay and the pump itself should be replaced, yes, the actual pump. because by the time most people received the campaign recall, the secondary pump could already have been damaged, like mine. And the swooshing sound does not sound normal also, coming from the supercharger, or the likes, it may or may not be related to the ECU upgrade. But, also, i have noticed like others have mentioned some performance degradation; it takes longer for that extra power to kick-n and throttle response is not as smooth!

MB USA doesn't want to cooperate; it time for a manguson moss warranty raising issue! This is relay, ECU, pumps, etc is a defective manufacturer issue! others agree or not? give guidance for reasons? This is not a normal wear and tear; the malfunctioning of an ECU program and/or relay is the causing other problems slash pump failures.
