The diameter of the upright star base and the flat emblem are different, with the upright star base being smaller and fitting within the recess of the hole in the W203 hood, and the flat emblem being bigger and fitting over the hole by a few mm.
The flat emblem will scratch your paint at the points of contact after securing it tightly. A slight ring will remain that can be seen upon removal. To prevent such scratching, use double stick tape or one sided felt on the back of the flat emblem prior to securing the emblem.
Some of the other badges/emblems not sourced from MB are made to fit within the recess, while others are not. I think the car is much more sporty looking without the upright star and even more stealth without the upgraded star grill. I got mine for free when I bought the car upon asking for it. And they did the install while I waited after I borrowed some double stick tape from their business office!
