The gears locked on my C55!

So, I finally decided to "push" the car today, since I really never pushed it after the Eurocharge ECU tune. btw, the car is a beast after the tune!

well anyways, I was doing some HEAVY driving, I was really pushing the car, I had the car in "M" mode, I was in 2nd gear, revving to about 5000-5500prm, i shifted up, pushed the car a bit, then downshifted back to second, and the gears locked, i couldn't upshift. The car just continuously stayed at a high rpm (while I was ****tin' my pants), the car's wheels locked, and i was sliding on the highway! (i was going at a quite moderate speed) i had to hold on the to steering wheel, then the car decided to shift up, so i pushed the pedal and the car came back straight, then i was trying to shift again, and it wouldnt shift! up OR down! so I pressed it back to D mode, and it just stayed in gear. I stopped by service road, and restarted the car, it's fine now

any idea whats going on?

happened to me once....but instead of staying in gear it went into neutral no up shifts or down. I pulled over and restarted the car then it never happened again I did take it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything but thay said that they updated my trans software??
hope it's nothing serious GL

I had the exact same thing happen a few months back. It only happened once, it went into neutral, restarted the car and hasn't happened again.

Its unnerving to say the least when it happened in traffic. Can anyone else chime in on what would cause that to happen?

Something like this happened to me last year in the summer. I was just driving normally, and then the transmission made a very HARD and sudden shift into 2nd gear. After that, the transmission stayed in 2nd gear the whole time. Switching to M/C/S modes did not change a thing. Essentially, the transmission went into "limp" mode.

When I got home (the whole time, it was in 2nd gear), I tried to shift into Reverse, but it didn't shift......it just went into neutral. Tried to shift back to Drive, but it just stayed in Neutral. So I shifted into Park and turned the car off. Turned it back on again and it shifted normally and I was able to back into my parking spot.

The next day, I took the car to the dealership. It started just fine, and it behaved normally all the way to the dealership. Told them about the problem, and they diagnosed the problem as a faulty "speed sensor" in transmission. Apparantly, once the transmission doesn't speed the car's speed, it goes default into "limp mode", meaning it will go to and stay in 2nd gear.

Had the faulty part replaced, and it's been fine since.

I took mine in for some standard maintenance last year and while it was there they said they also did a software update for the transmission. I wonder if this is to address a wide spread issue? The car did shift "different" after that. Not better or worse, just different

hmm, I had my TCU software updated from MB before,

I'm not sure if it is a faulty speed sensor, but the transmission was in a limp mode until i restarted the car.

Something similar has happened to me. I was told it was because of low transmission fluid. It happened once at first... then a few more times a few months later. hope this isnt the case for you, but it might be worth checking out to be on the safe side.

happened to my C32 in the first year and happened on my parents 2001 ML430 when they still had it. the transmission would pop out of gear in the ML and it would go into limp in the C32.

issue on the 32 was a speed sensor on the rear axle. never figured what was wrong with the ML except it was a POS, but a powerful POS.

Wow, it seems to be a pretty widespread problem.

Other than a few Factory TSBs, my MLs (all three of them never had any problems) I had a 1998 ML320 first year out, 1999 ML 430 and now a 2001 ML 55. Except for the few TSBs and oil changes, not a single problem from any of them. The C32 and C55 have been more "needy" than my MLs??

^I had a lot of problems with my 03 ML500 Inspiration, it was a countless headach, I had the car shut down on me over 5 times on the highway, it was bad, it just shut off.
