Oil Filter Cover Socket/Wrench

Anyone have a link to purchase a decent oil filter cover wrench and/or socket? I can't seem to find anything suitable on the net. None of the wrenches or sockets my local parts guy has seem to fit either. The thing that is starting to drive me crazy about my Benz and Bimmer is that every time I want to perform routine maintenance or repairs I need to buy new tools. You used to be able to strip an entire car down with a set of sockets, a 3/8 ratchet and a couple screw drivers.

Thanks for the help.

I got mine from Pep Boys for about $4. It is a standard sized oil filter socket.

This is what you want it's a 74mm 14 point metal wrench.

I just grip mine hard with both hands and twist?

But your local store should have a large filter wrench that you should be able to grip with as well

I tried but the cap must have been put on by the Incredible Hulk. Anyway, I used a piece of crap universal 73-76 mm plastic filter wrench from NAPA which slipped on the cap, however, with a latex glove inserted in it I got enough grip to get it on an on.

never use the wrench to install, only to remove a stubborn filter. =D

Yea, the o-ring on the cap can make it get really stiff to get off. But once it's off, hand tightening after replacement should be enough

The Hazet tool I have has a 3/8" drive in it so I can torque the cap to the 25 nm that is printed on it. It's plastic and so I don't take any chances with it being too loose or too tight. BTW I also used a yellow paint marker and put a little stripe on the filter housing and the cap after it's was torqued. Now I have a quick visual that it hasn't moved and I don't really need to torque it next time, just return it to where the two stripes become one.

I did not use the wrench to put it on and it looks like I made a typo when I wrote the above post. I have always been of the practice to put a thin layer of oil on all rubber gaskets, o-rings, etc., before installing. It has never failed me in the past, however, this was the first time I did the oil on the C32 since I bought it. For all I know, the last owner put that cap on with an impact wrench because it was really on tight.

I don't know my buddy only hand tightened his filter and it backed off and was spewing oil all over the accessories (alternator, powersteering pump etc.) I tighten mine down pretty snug.

It's why they have the torque spec molded into the filter housing, it matters.

Seems the local oil cap sockets don't fix just right. I place a microfiber between the cap socket I have, tap it down softly with a hammer, and that makes a snug fit.

Come on guys, you own a Mercedes Benz, is $12 too much for a tool that fits?

This is for those who want to say they don't own a Mazda.
