C32 rough idle

Hey fellas,

I took my C32 into the dealership last week to get a checkup before I hit 100k and my extended warranty expires. They ended up replacing one of my thrust arms, and that was it...however, when I got my car back, it sounded really rough at idle. It seems to have gotten worse the more I drive it, but besides that, accelerating and driving are smooth. I'm going to have to take it back in, but do you guys have any hunches as to what it might be just by listening to it?

http://www.tehphil.com/ot/c32roughidle.AVI (~32mb)

Thanks!

do you feel any vibration inside the car?

from the vid it sounds like something is loose and vibrating. apply some throttle and see if it goes away while on the throttle. if it does then it could be one of the many pulleys.

If it does it while the car is idle (transmission not engaged) it could be the engine mounts as those go bad after about 40k miles or so and need to be replaced, depending on how aggressive you drive.

If it does it when the car is idle and transmission engaged (at a stop light for example) then I would have them look at the engine and transmission mounts and also the flex disc as those wear out around 40k miles, depending on how aggressive you drive.

The rubber mounts have a gel liquid inside to help absorb vibration, over time based on driving habits, and temperature conditions the rubber deteriorates and leaks the gel, causing the rubber mount to leak the gel and causes the rubber mount to weaken, which can cause vibration that gets worse over time.

By hearing the video it just doesn't sound right... with out physically being their its hard to discern where exactly the noise is coming from. Unless the mounts are that bad and deteriorated into nothing, I don't think thats the issue. I would have them check it out for sure. As it could be a idle pulley or something else inside the engine it self.

Thanks guys. I took it into the dealer this morning and brought up what you guys suggested. The tech came out to listen and take a look and said it was the supercharger pulley

I'm out of extended warranty in ~900 miles, thankfully I brought it in when I did...probably would've cost a pretty penny to replace

That's what I was thinking. If they didn't change it already, ask to keep the old pulley and bolt. There are several people on here (myself included) that would pay you for them. We all replace the bearings and many of us wouldn't mind having an extra pulley. The bolt itself is impossible to get. They will only sell it with a new pulley. If you get it from them, I would be really interested in buying the bolt off of you if you were willing to sell.

Yes if it is idling/shaking rough it can be the motor mounts. But It can also be transmission mounts or the flex disc.

But in his case from the video it didn't sound like the case, sounded like a pulley or maybe something internal, however being he was still under warranty I figured I'd put that out there to check anyway being they will replace them under warranty, might as well get all you can out of the warranty.

Glad to hear they found the issue and it was the pulley and they replaced it.

Not sure if or when his motor, tranny, or flex disc was replaced, but I would complain of the rough idle/shaking again and have them check those items and get them replaced for free under warranty, other wise its costly to do later.
