i bought a extractor for boats on ebay i think for around $90 it was 10L. I would drain it. Its not worth the risk of engine damage.

Crawl under the car and drain a little oil from it. Take the drain plug off for 5 to 10 seconds and put it back in.

Then get the car off the stands or jack and re-measure the oil level. I bet you didn't set the car down before you measured the oil level?

And personally, I don't think 1/2 of a Qt will cause any damage. Hell you'll but a half a qt every 3000 miles anyway. At least you better. Otherwise the engine is built way too tight.

Yeah, just drain a bit of oil. All you need to do is open the drain plug a bit and then just let some of it come out.

I think 8.5 quarts is correct, but I always put 8 and then see if it needs more oil. You never know if you have drained all the oil. Depending on the time you let the oil drain will definitely be a deciding factor.

What's weird is that every time I have checked my oil by using dyno mode it always says that it's a quart low. If I add a quart it usually stays the same. So I'm not too sure what's going on. I need to get a dip stick also to make sure I'm doing it correct, but I haven't had a problem doing ever since I've done my own oil changes.

Another way to make sure that you are putting in the right amount of oil is to put the car on a level surface and check the oil level before removing it. Once you get it out, put in 7 or 8 quarts and put the old oil in to the old containers. By putting the oil in the old containers you should be able to get an idea of how much oil came out and if the computer said that you had 8.5 quarts and you were only able to fill 7 or 8, then you know how much to put in.

Like I said before I only put 8 and then I check the fluid level to make sure it is ok.

I don't mess around with jacks (unless I have to), I use these and they hang on the wall out of the way when done.

Why is that? These are the most gradual angle ramps I've found. I did have to put some one by lumber extensions at the front so the chin wouldn't drag on the ramps.

Mmm - is that your Firebird?

I'd drive that instead of worrying about the oil in the Benz.

Of course, if you had a topsider, you would have already sucked the add'l 1/2 quart out.

Nice Laguna Seca, btw. You've got me beat on the exterior, as yours is much more smurfy than my Orion Blue, but I've got you beat on the inside of the car, where it looks like a smurf had swallowed an M80.

HAHAH! It's my step dad's 67. Its a fun car, but theres no insurance on it right now. My step dad and mom just got an 02 35th anniv camaro convertible at the local dealership for like $16k and found out the exact car they got is in the history of camaro book.
And that car has all sorts of **** done to it, so theyre playing around with that one for now, haha.

And yeah, im working on getting an extractor now. Just went out to the car though and did the oil level check and it said "OK", so I started it and drove it around the block a few times and im gonna check it again in a min.

I hate to be the one to say, "I told you so", so I won't say it.

Oh hell, I'll say it. Having done many oil changes, successfully, I will reiterate: go with the Mityvac (I have the 8.8L model), tighten the filter to 25 nm and add the 8 quarts first then check the level.

Don't drive it with too much oil.

There. I said it (again).

trust me, I know I ****ed up! haha

I just wasnt thinking. I am gonna order a mityvac today, I probably only need the 7.3L model.
Just checked the car and it said "oil level ok" again..
So idk what to think?

So, ill take it for a drive later and then do I wait 5 min after driving to check it? or can it be checked as soon as I turn the car off?

If it's just a little over, it'll say ok when cold and overfilled when warm. Another trick to get under the car is to drive two wheels (same side) up on the curb (if you live in that kind of neighborhood).

You need to wait 5 min. Most car's will remind you to wait if you try to check before 5 min.

Unfortunately I dont live in that kind of area. Everything is pretty flat up here, hah.
Not to mention it was a pain in the *** getting those belly pans back on with the 2 clips up front.

Maybe I can drop a match down the dip stick tube to burn some of the oil up??

Unless you like making multiple trips to the oil recycling center, you better get the 8.8L or larger. If you do the math, taking out 8.5 qts means 8.044 liters.

sure you can, there is a howto on this if you search a bit. Changing oil is quite easy, especially if you have a vacuum pump - you don't even have to clibm under the car. there is an oil extraction tube sticking up from the back of the motor you can use for this.

As for the ramps, I wanted to buy some as well until someone told me they were dangerous because they can fail as well. So

I do agree though that I don't fully trust jackstands either. Whenever working on a car, I always use 2 methods to hold up the car. I'll have a jackstand holding up the car and a jack in another spot near it that's tight against the body but not lifting. Can't be too safe.

True but there's an issue. The trans tube is smaller and the size tubing you can get down it is also. So evac rates are pretty slow. There is an adapter (how the dealer does it) which fits over the head of the tube and uses the whole tube diameter for flow. Not sure where to get them. Maybe the mfgs of the pumps have them now.

Also, in the 722.6 (5 spd) transmission, the drain plug on the torque convertor was eliminated in MY2000 so drain or siphoning the pan only gets out about 1/2 (4qts). In the 722.9 (7 spd) you can't even drain the pan. MB came up with a contraption which fits over the drain plug (that's probably not the right term anymore) and pumps/siphons fluid in and out.

That's a blanket statement that is only part true. The Rhino Ramps I have won't just fold up like the cheap stamped ones you are refering to. The bottom side is like a honeycomb of the material. They are very strong, I've used them for years........I used them last night under two different cars. Sometimes you need to work with a wheel off and so I too use a jack and a jack stand at the same time.

I disagree. I've changed my transmission fluid a few times. It only took about 15-20min to pump out all the fluid. Its nice to be able to drop the pan when your changing the filter and not worry about hot transmission fluid falling on you.

Sorry, OP - the oil extraction tube I was referring to was for the engine oil. The tranny tube is also back there but hard to reach (must remove the engine cover) and I've only used it for refilling the tranny, not extracting. I had to drain the oil out of the tranny using the drain plug.

I drained and refilled the tranny twice (with a quick 2 minute idle in between) to minimize the dirty oil remaining in the torque converter.
