black exhaust tips?
....yes scrape it off with a razor then I polish it. our tips are polished stainless steele not chrome plated so using a razor will not ruin the finish....if the razor thing scares you...use scotch brite plastic dish pad with wd-40 then polish.works really well....

Thats what I actually did too. Took a flat blade and scraped off the carbon build up on the bottom...I'll try taking a scotch brite pad to it later this week when the weather finally gets nice...i hope.

Pretty much carried at every auto parts store.
Someone recommended it on crossfireforum.org and I purchased a tin about two years ago. Helped me get the stained black crap off of my Crossfire's dual exhaust tips. When I purchased my C55 about two weeks ago, the car was extremely clean except the exhaust tips were heavily stained.
For best results, tear off a piece of the material in the tin (its a cotton material with a strong chrome polish embedded into the fibers), rub down the exhaust tips very well. When I cleaned the tips of my C55 for the first time I spent a good twenty minutes rubbing. Once done rubbing, let the material dry for a few minutes, then buff out. Repeat as many times as you want.
Most likely, you wont get a completely shiny exhaust on the first go around. Drive the car for a few days and then the next time you wash it, repeat the above steps. I think this compound actually works over time to break up the black dust on the exhaust. Probably by the second or third wash and good scrubbing/polish, your exhaust tips will be looking like new.
No offense but this is an AMG mercedes. Why would you want to cover up the distinctive quad AMG exhaust tips that most car owners would love to have? By painting over your exhaust I think it would be harder to see/fully appreciate one of the only features of the car that delineates our AMG W203 from any other non-AMG W203.

I saw a completely murdered out, flat black CLS63 when i took a vacation in hong kong last year. I was surprised that the exhaust tips were even blacked out and it looked pretty awesome on it.
Then again, my car is not flat black so...
Finally seeing my tips shiny again made me realize how nice they were...I just wish they were bigger like the C63 tips.
I still like the flat black tips...but on flat black cars for now
I would avoid sandpaper. Just give the chromes another "treatment" of scrubbing and then polishing in a few days. You will find that the black stain that is really stuck on the bottom of the tips will be a little easier to buff out. Once you have gone at it a few more times over the course of several treatments, the staining should be all gone.
Good luck.
