I have the same problem. In the morning the lcd display is perfect. Mid day, the display turns a little darker, and can only read the middle if the current mph is displayed. I think it has to do with the sun light and heat trapped in the car, although my car is tinted to the max.

There are a couple of threads about this. The W203s have LCD screens which, over time, begin to fade in hot weather. Apparently, it has something to do with an electrical connection which can be cleaned if you know how to access and remove the LCD screen. I have heard that this task is a major PITA.

Faded Display
I took my car into the dealer and until it dies completely they won't change it out as Mercedes charges them back if it's not 100% broken.

Search the C32 forum (search thread titles only) and use the search term "MFD"
I posted a couple of threads that contain various links to the multifunction display problem in W203s. I forget who it was, but there was one person on the W203 (non-AMG) who seemed pretty knowledgeable, and said that it was a question of removing the MFD and cleaning some contacts on a power strip of some sort. Check it out. I intend to attempt this when I have some spare time, as I really have no interest in handing the stealership $2,000.00 to fix the problem. If any of you take a crack at it, please post here to let us all know how it went, and I will do the same.

I havent found nor heard of cleaning contacts for it to solve the problem. The only solution I found is to find a low mile replacement cluster, from a c240 or c32 or c320 and swap that lcd screen. On tuesday I am going to see if I can source a screen from vdo. There are a lot of cluster repair services on ebay for this cluster, so these people must be sourcing out these screens from somewhere.

Please let us know how your VDO investigation goes. It seems like there are hundreds of W203 owners with this problem.

I tried Googling "W203 LCD" and a couple of hits came up (about 1/2 page down in the results) which seem to indicate that replacements might be available from China? Might also be worth checking in to.

I dont think there is a way to adjust the instrument cluster lcd screen when the screen itself is fading. It is like leaving a cell phone and its screen facing the sun for a few hours and the screen is black, except in this case the dashboard in excess temperatures for 6-8 years which causes the screen to fade and go bad.
I just changed my screen and notice a day and night difference. Pics will follow in minutes
