If you don't track your car regularly, it probably isn't necessary at all. And if you're doing it for cosmetics, it certainly won't be the most obvious thing for most people to notice.
There must be some value to it, as others have done similar things. Our old '89 Maserati Spyder with a Gleason LSD had a plastic scoop to funnel air from beneath the pumpkin to cooling fins on the end plate. Porsche on their 911 race cars in the '70s had a gear pump and cooler too, though it may have been for the transmission lubrication also.

according to shops that recommend installing cooling fins is that they also help somewhat elongate the rubber parts around that area.

it's said to lower the diff oil temp, but i haven't done any spirited driving since i put it on.
