According to the C55 MB press release, the differential cooling fins could cool the differential by up to 15 degrees celsius when pushing the car at continuous high speeds.
If you don't track your car regularly, it probably isn't necessary at all. And if you're doing it for cosmetics, it certainly won't be the most obvious thing for most people to notice.
