Thanks to all who posted the great info regarding crank pulleys and their replacement, I am researching upgrading to a evosport stage 1 since one of my pulleys started with a intermittent squeal. I've had the stethoscope on every pulley but can't pinpoint it yet. It's not so much a squeal as a rhythmic squeak. My next step will be to nail polish a mark on each pulley and see what pulley rev matches.Anyway, myStar DVD describes the factory method and a few threads on the board give further insight into crank pulley removal. I'm planning on buying the factory counterholder to lock up the pulley. The DVD work flow calls for the battery to be disconnected (which involves a quiescent current source) and removal of the electric fan assembly. After all this electrical disconnecting the reassembly procedure calls for a Star diagnosis reset. Needless to say I don't plan on getting a Star service box. I do have a code reader that came with the DVD though. Is it necessary to disconnect the batt when removing the fan?, Or what problems can be encountered if I don't remove the fan. Finally, can this job be done with jack stands and a Craftsman all red aluminum racing 3 pump jack. :-)

It's a good idea to have the battery disconnected when you remove the fan - better safe than sorry. As for the other bit:

I was able to remove my crank pulley and the only thing I had to use was a breaker bar and the mercedes crank tool. I did not have to take my car apart to install it. Make sure to purchase a new crank pulley bolt.

+1, I did mine about a year ago with a factory pulley and its silent, doesn't wobble and works great, New bolt is essential in the replacement and its about a $3 dollar part

I was able to get mine off and replace it with the EC 185mm with an impact gun by just removing the fan
