No it did not stop spinning but I did unplug the power.

Here is a video I shot while doing it. Keep in mind it hasn't rendered fully on Youtube but you can at least hear the noise and see what I'm doing. The power was unplugged during this entire video

The clutch is making contact with the pulley. Possible to fix this with a few small shims...

Seems like an easy enough fix.

Also to verify, the shims would go between the area shown in the pic below correct?

Do you have a link to purchase the correct shims by any chance?

Thanks again I appreciate your help

EDIT: my brother says these should work?

Correct... Take off the front pulley, and you should find at least one shim in there. Use that to determine the correct shim to use. In this case Mercedes would diagnose and tell you a entire new clutch assembly is required. They tell people with bad front pulley bearing a new clutch is needed, LOL...

Oh I have no doubt I would have been screwed at the dealer lol. Software guy meets hardware.

Here is something Interesting my brother found another thread (right here on MB world) and the guy in this video has the EXACT same noise as my car

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAcmJRZrpBo

Someone mentioned in his thread it's the Clutch bearing. Is this the same as the supercharger baring? If so I may as well order both parts. Kill two birds with one stone.

No, in this video it's the bearing in the front pulley.

I would suggest replacement of the pulley bearing while you're at it. I assume the engine pulley system is still stock. There's an idler pulley right next to the supercharger pulley that fails often. This should be replaced as well.

ok so we're in the garage right now. Removed the pulley etc however there doesn't seem to be a way to remove the clutch? We've search on the forum and run up dry. I don't see how we could put any shims in without removing the clutch.

The only way seems like to remove the front of the super charger, which can't be done because the stupid clutch is in the way of a couple bolts...

Any idea how to remove the thing?

You shouldn't need to remove the clutch... Take a photograph of where you're at?

ohhh those... Well getting to those was easy. I thought it was BEHIND that clutch not in front. (Idiot in training)

I don't have a camera and he's in the middle of putting everything back together (he has school in the morning) but it was pretty easy to take everything apart. There was at least 5 shims on there. (How many should there be?)

I'm also not sure where we'd find those. He says a shop could make some. I assumed they'd be like a washer but they are almost paper thin.

EDIT: one thing to note might be helpful. The clutch plate did looked scratched as if something was scraping it, but I'm guessing this is because they come together when the SC engages?

Gap should be between .20-.30mm. Also check to ensure the plate isn't warped at all causing contact with the clutch at certain points.

Hmm He said he doesn't think it's warped which is good. We don't have anything to measure the distance, that is a small amount, so we'll have to stop by napa tomorrow to get something to measure.

One good thing to note, the SC bearing looks almost brand new and is very quite. So you where right, it isn't that at all. Guess we'll have to wait till tomorrow.

If your ever in So Cal I owe you a beer or two

The clutch and pulley plate shouldn't touch AFIK... Pulley bolt should be torqued to 20nm. Start her up maybe something was stuck in there, or the bolt was over torqued?

Hopefully this can be fixed without having to find a new clutch. In that case you owe me a bottle of Patron, and a few 24 packs...

ha ha Patron it is.

Well he didn't torque the bolt.. will have to do that tomorrow I suppose.

Either way I drove it home and it didn't blow up lol. We did manage to change out the Super Charger oil (smelled horrible) black and nasty. Filled the SC back up. Some people notice a difference I honestly don't.

While it's extremely irritating and honestly the noise is starting to **** me off we are making progress. Oh and check this out, the owner before filled the coolant system up with water...no coolant at all...So that needs flushed and filled.

*Sigh* And so they mystery continues...

Rather than take the entire thing apart again today I stopped by Pep Boys and picked up a feeler gauge. The space between the pulley and clutch is .30 which is what it's supposed to be. So my guess is, the spacers are not the issue

I'm at a total loss here. There isn't much play so I don't think it's the coupler, we spun the pulley on it's own and the bearing sounds great, the spacing is correct. I'm about to just hit it with a hammer and see if that helps. (kidding of course)

Viet_Amg, I listened to your advice but we tried to remove the front of the charger yesterday but had no luck. There are 6 bolts on the super charger. BUT, 2 bolts are behind the clutch. There is no way to remove those 2 bolts so that we can take off the front of the super charger without taking off the clutch.

How do we remove the clutch?? Or do we have to remove the entire super charger?

yea, if you can't get to the bolt in the bottom then the whole supercharger need to come out....

the end cover come off then you can remove the clutch afterward..

hope you find the problem...

Talking

FIXED!!!!!!

Well the the AMG gods where with us today and my brother really worked is magic. 2 days ago I ordered the SC pulley bearing just in case. Figured we may as well change that as well.

Well today we pulled everything apart and listened to the bearing. It didn't sound bad but you could feel the bearings moving around, it was dirty and a PITA to remove. Stuck the new bearing in, (OEM) filled up the power steering fluid while we where at it (the pump sounded a bit loud) and WOW does the car sound QQUUIIITTEEE. It's like a brand new car. All you hear is the engine the way it should be. Once the lit is closed the sound sort of reminds me of the noise a 777 makes while inside the cabin. Just awesome.

I can't thank everyone here enough for all your help you guys are awesome. Couldn't have done it without you and my bro.

So to some it up for future Googlers...The sound in the video was fixed by replacing the pulley bearing. (Make sure gap between the clutch and pulley as stated by gt4awd is .30 or so)

I drove around pretty much for no good reason tonight but I really enjoyed the ride.

Pulley tensioner? I just replaced mine with one from the stealership and it is bad, so they sent me another just need to swap them. I at first believed it was the sc pulley(since I just installed a code3 and replaced all pullies and bearings) but looking at the tensioner you can see it move back and forth
