Check Engine light is on
Hi guys,
Yesterday the Check Engine light was activated on my beloved C55. It has 40k miles on the odometer and I performed oil changes regularly on it, I never had any issues with it. I have some questions for you: I don't know if I must go to a MB dealer, or just I let my mechanic check it (he has general knowledge of car repairing, he's not specialized on MB's, yet). Obviously, I want to save money, if possible (for upgrades ;-) )
What would you guys do? and if I go with the car to the MB dealer, do you have any idea how much is going to cost me?
Thanks to all....

A normal diagnostic at the dealer can run you $100-$200 depending on what they find. I'd go to autozone and have them run a free diagnostic first just to see if it's something simple and use the money for what you need instead of finding out what you need. If it turns out to to be more serious you lost nothing. Just my opinion.

I found that autozone is reluctant to do any free scans. I bought their cheapest scan tool for about $30 and just pull the codes myself. The codes can be searched on this site or google to tell you what component caused the CEL.

X2 on either going to autozone for a free code scan or just buy the cheap scanner and do it yourself.
Last two check engine lights for me ended up just being a loose gas cap. Hope your as lucky.

An OBD meter is a must. Like you, I'm new to working on cars but it's amazing just how straight forward most of it is. (Especially with help from these fellows)
Pick up an OBDII reader. The bad thing about your CEL is that it's on, the good thing, an OBD will probably tell you exactly what the issue. Sometimes Autozone will let you rent them for a small fee. If not pick up a cheap one and check the codes yourself. It's very simple to do. You'll also know exactly what the issue is should you take the car in.

Yep, you hit the nail... I pulled the gas cap out and put it back in place and the light went off. Thank you!

Nice, I didn't think about that. I think the O ring has probably been the reason for mine acting up on rare occasions.
