Getting a Second Car - Advice Needed
As a car nut, I have already spent considerable time pondering the possibilities. I'll be honest, the second car isn't for me, it is for my live-in girlfriend. So, technically speaking, it isn't a second car, rather a car owned and driven by my girlfriend that I will maintain, repair, and care for as I do my C55. To put it another way, I will be responsible for the car's upkeep and will often drive it when her and I travel together.
Price range (based on research I have done on the types of cars that she/I am interested in) - High End: $25,000, Comfortable: $20,000, Low End: $17,000
She wants something sporty but practical and good on gas mileage. She's the kind of girl who was raised in a Ford family and who would never consider "treating" herself to a luxury car, like a Mercedes, but who (although she has only admitted this to me once or twice), really appreciates the luxury. As a teacher, she is also concerned about outward appearances and paying for premium fuel. The car will need to do better on gas than my C55 (which should be easy) and have room in the back for our small dog's crate for trips (the crate sits easily on the back seat of my C55).
She has been looking at a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, the Toyota RAV4 Limited, and the Ford Fusion while I, on the other hand, have been singing the praises of a nice low mileage (under 40,000 miles) used CLK350, E350, ML350 (although the ML is not a serious consideration), or 2007 C230 with the sport package.
Although we are clashing fundamentally on the type of car (Japanese/American versus German), she seems open to the idea (and really loves the comfort and look of Mercedes generally). I think I have gotten her past her concerns about the premium fuel, however, she is worried about the stigma associated with Mercedes and the high maintenance costs (as mentioned previously, I do most maintenance items myself on my C55, and would do the same on her car).
Ultimately, I want her to be happy in whatever car she gets. So if she test drives the Sonata and loves it, while I might cringe internally, I will be happy if she is happy and will learn how to maintain a Hyundai the same way I did for my Mercedes. Practically and economically speaking, the Hyundai would be a far superior car on cost of maintenance and fuel. However, I have so much confidence in Mercedes engineering and reliability (this is coming from a guy who has driven the 3.2L MB powered V6 Crossfire and the C55 and has had smooth sailing from both cars and not had any catastrophic failures - knock on wood - in either car), that I feel it would be a shame not to add another MB to the stable, even if the stable is only partially mine. I would be much more comfortable at this point working on an MB 3.5L where I know where everything is and which I know I can turn to this forum for assistance, than a new vehicle with totally different design and engine layout/specifications.
So to get to the point (sorry for going on), do you think I should push for the MB in this situation? If so, thoughts on the E, CLK, C? I understand the best she can afford for that price range is a 2005-2007 for either model with the under 40,000 mileage requirement. Just looking for some input from anyone in a similar situation or anyone who just has something to say! Thanks.
I hate to admit, but Bimmers' driving dynamics is much better than MBs. It also depends on what other people at her workplace are driving. If she wants to be sensible, I think Bimmers attract less attention than MBs in general.

Honda Accord V-6 for a DD is a great car, good on gas, reliable as stink.......The new (to the Accord is the 3.5, virtually bulletproof)
Kia Optima SX (DI Turbo 4) is a great looking car.......................can be had for much less than a loaded Honda Accord..................
Hyundai Sonata is a nice looking car BUT resale values on these things is still a big ???
Toyota Rav 4 is a great DD and with the V-6 can be downright quick and can haul the cages too in the very back.................Also as reliable as stink
NOT a whole lot in the MB stable that'll appeal to her for the $$; I'd get her a SL65 AMG BS if it were ME!!!

Of course, I blatantly disregard all my advice when it comes to myself so take it for what its worth
" sounds exactly like myself. I know the economical and logical choice here, but can't resist wanting another MB (along with the other reasoning I provided for this choice below). I think I would lean towards the RAV4 Limited if not an MB for its reliability and 4WD (I know, its not a real 4WD) for the winters in Northern VA. Its a shame the GLK hasn't been out a bit longer, the prices would have come down by now. I should have mentioned, I am willing to travel up to 250 - 400 miles for a great deal. So for the price range she is looking, a quality MB can be found.

I have a Rav4 Limited as my beater/winter/secondary vehicle. VERY reliable.
In the 5 years I've owned it, I only had to change brake pads and cabin filters... aside from the oil of course.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

You could also look for a used RX. Not sure on the pricing on those, but the ride quality is excellent.
These cars are very reliable.
Good luck.
