ZR3?

Does this require a radar detector (specifically a Passport)? Is this legal?

Finally, where can you get one of these and what is a reasonable price?

It's legal....

You don't need a radar with it...but only detects and scrambles laser....in my opinion you should use it with a radar....the good thing about the passport 8500 is that they both can be "integrated"!

You (in theory) can only buy it from authorized dealers....istallation is included....check the website!

or if you have no problems with money and want the best of both then check:

Question for Fly

I'm looking around for a radar detector (nothing serious, just probably boredom @ work :o) and I see you have a Passport 8500. I'm considering getting it (wireless, quick to take off before the cops see it, I live in VA) but I see that you have it mounted near your visor. Is that the only place or most optimal place to put it? I was thinking of placing it at the bottom of the windshield, near the Inspection and Registration stickers. Is that an OK place to put a radar detector?

Over here in Belgium radar/laser detector are strictly forbidden. The cops cannot really detect if you have radar detector onboard. However they do detect a laser scrambler. Laser scramblers produce an error code on their gun and they will pull you over and know what to look for !
What is actually worse than radar and laser are the fixed installations. They don't use radar nor laser, but use sensors that are build into the road. Only GPS can help out to detect these buggers !

The rule of thumb for radar detector placement is higher the better. For laser however, it should go lower, or closer to the license plate or headlights. If you use 8500 for both radar and laser detection (no separate laser detector/diffuser), lower windshield would be good compromise in your situation.

Thanks for the suggestion. By putting it that low though, would it be too much of a compromise that it would severely weaken the performance of both? Or should I just live without the the laser performance and make sure the radar detecting performance is strong? Is that a sacrifice that may be worth taking?

Don't get too caught up on the placement. Just make sure don't put it behind window tint, decal, stickers etc. You will be ok as long it has clear front and rear view.
