C55 CAMS
Ive been on mbworld for a while now and I havent really heard much about camming the car, I do recall a few people having issues and c55asleep using a Slr cam, but i was wondering if anyone could voice there opinions about which cams are good, mild/aggressive etc.
I am looking for some cams to buy and was wondering which are recommended? |
|
I've heard not much gains to be had on a n/a car with cams.
Hey loud... thinking of a Houston aMG meet.... at MSR raceway.... to run the go-carts when it cools off..... will post up a new thread. L8r. |
some pte cams listed in for sale forum this site:)
|
I have been wondering also. Kleemann cams dont give any power unless you have the kompressor. I have heard mixed stories of SLR cams. I wouldnt buy any unless you were sure of a proven power gain..
|
I saw the video of the SL with the cams, and i could only imagine in person... I know a ecu tune would also be nessesary, and anyone recommend one guy over another?
I want to do all of bolt ons then afterwards do an ecu tune |
I would recommend PTE cams which are slightly more aggressive than the SLR and Kleemann cams.

What gains could i expect? |

Do you have them installed?
What gains could i expect? To benefit from cams you should also have exhaust and intake mods. Without them you won't see much of a gain in power, but the curve of HP and TQ will change depending on the cam specs. |

newzchspy - I agree with that by them selves not much gain.
But I have to wonder how they would work in conjunction with a nice set of ported/polished heads, headers, exhaust mods, tune? I wonder if you could make stock C63 type HP/TQ with this combo n/a????? |

Havoc is correct. Unless you've got the kompressor or other mods, I can not see the cost/benefit of the cams being worth the effort and cost. My Kleemann does NOT have the cams, Alumar's did and his did NOT put out any more HP than mine on the same exact dyno. Its an expensive option and I agree that unless the intake (i.e. Kompressor or other intake mods) and perhaps shorty headers for exhaust, cams alone will not make that much of a difference. Unless you're looking for a nice sound due to an aggressive cam that goes haruump haruump at idle.
For now having my current setup, is it worth it? |

I do have a Renntech Airbox and second cats and res deleted, and hoping that I can get some LT's and high flo cats from dyno comp.
For now having my current setup, is it worth it? depends on the cams of course...............Call Kleemann, they will sell you a set. The Renntech airbox is not going to flow near what forced induction would, so they question is, are you getting enough intake to justify new cams?? |

For now having my current setup, is it worth it? LT's would be ideal. MBH Motorsports LT's have a gain of 31whp and about 25wtq and that is with stock software! So LT's will give you even more power. :y A bigger throttle body would also be ideal, but you would have to modify the intake manifold which has yet to be done. I would go with PTE for the cams, which by the way, are very mild per the specs, but most guys including myself say they are aggressive only because on paper it's specs are slightly more aggressive compared to Kleemann's and the SLR's cam specs, which are even more mild. The valve to piston clearance in the 55 N/A and 55K is close to begin with and is the reason our aftermarket cams are actually not that aggressive after all. Therefore, I say go with the most aggressive cam available to you, the PTE cams which should give you the most power! :y For a reference of aggressive cams, Chevy's new LS7 N/A engine which has a stock cam profile of 230/211 .591”/.591”. (pretty aggressive) can accept a very aggressive 243/259 .691”/.702” (GT21 Lingenfelter cam) and remarkably requires no modification to the stock pistons! Chevy rocks! :X Following are the cam specs for the 55 N/A, 55K, and SLR. :y 2003 CLK55 cams (naturally aspirated) http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/9...ture001al9.jpg 2006 E55 cams (kompressor) http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/8113/picture003ah6.jpg SLR cams http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/3...ture004jx8.jpg |

I say, Yes, it is worth it, but only if your budget allows. Remember, AMG added cams, shorty headers, higher flowing airbox, and different tune to the SLK55 AMG Black Series just to add another 50 HP. That's like 12.5 HP per mod which is not much, but AMG will not go too aggressive so there is still more power to be had! :naughty:

I know those chevys man.... great power, my friend has a camaro and man it has torque lol. Some on the camaro5 guys know me, im the only german at american and camaro meets haha |

As far as not having issues short or long term, well you shouldn't, but any engine can fail at any time so there is no guarantee modded or not. |

All of our available aftermarket cams will not shorten valve train life because they're not that aggressive and will not cause much stress. PTE states that it is not required to change out stock valve springs to stronger ones with his cams which tells you how mild they actually are.
