Hello AMG fans,
I went to Germany this week-end to do the spark plugs & change my rear tires and while I was cruising at 120mph I was wondering about the rpm…
Driving around 110mph, the rpm was at 4000. How safe is that for our engine? It might be a stupid question but I am really wondering until what amount of rpm can you go without issues? Is it harmful to drive 60 miles at 4000rpm or our engines are built for it?
Btw this is really were you see it would be nice to have a 6th gear on our cars…
Thanks.

I would assume the components of your engine (much like any other engine) are designed to operate within a certain RPM range, going outside of said operating range could then lead to failure, this is where the red line comes into play.
There is always the possibility of components failing under normal operation but for the most part as long as you aren't riding the rev limiter you should be fine

Back way more years than I'd prefer to mention my father's '66 BMW 1800A was rated at a maximum cruising speed of 6,000 rpm. I would certainly hope that our "assembled by one man" AMG motors could at least do that.
Having said that, for sustained high rpms I would like to see a supplemental air-oil cooler added as from what I've found oil temps are more closely related to engine speed than load. The OEM water-oil cooler is OK, but I suspect that it's more there to help the engine oil get up to temperature more quickly.

C32 AMG - in Pewter
I was in Switzerland and Germany this Summer and got a taste of two things:
* enjoyed Autobahn but with a non-AMG Mercedes rental, I wish I had my car there![drive](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/driving.gif)
* got nailed by a speed-cam in Switzerland going 20km/h over the 100km/h limit. I now have a nice bill to pay: 170 CHF![Confused](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Anyway, enjoy the Autobahn!
