Oil usage?
just wanted to see how much oil everyone's C55 is drinking.
I know the C55 is a thirsty engine to begine with. I have the typical valve cover weep, but no other oil leaks, and not seeing any oil smoke. I typically get the add a quart message every 2-3K miles and I wanted to see how everyone else is fairing. Using standard 0-40 Mobile1 as recommended by Merc. my daily commute is stop and go 45 mi each way so I know that is harder on drivetrains than constant speed.
I have put close to 50K miles on in 2 years. currently at 123K.

Oil Consumption
I just changed my oil, put 6K miles on since last change. Mobil 1 0W-40 out and back in. I took out exactly what went in, 9 Quarts (drained from both plugs for an hour). Mine has no leaks and no noteworthy oil consumption.
I just hit 35K miles though, my engine is specs are probably a little tighter.

I'll speak in 10k intervals; between services.
If I track or drive the car hard for a extended period of time, I usually have to add a quart.
However, if I go the full 8-10k without a hard driving event the car will usually be fine.

i used about 2 qts over last summer when i got the car but when i changed her oil i went from 0-w40 to MB dealer told me they used 5w-40 now... now either its cause its been the winter time and i havent driven as stupid lately or the new oil doesnt burn as much and ive put about 4k on the car since my change and havent had to add oil

I have very slight valve cover weep, some valve recirc cover leak (even though I took it off and resealed it with new gasket sealer, I guess it didn't work), some oil cap leak (new seal going on next change), and I lose about 1 qt of Mobil 1 0W-40 every 5,000 miles. I change my oil every 7,500-8,000 miles.
And I've never heard of Mobil 1 causing sludge accumulation.

Mine does not burn any oil at all either. Only 27K miles though.

oddly enough as it sounds my buddy owns eurowise in charlotte and he has a tech who used to be a mercedes tech that specialized in the AMG cars and he explained it to me that it is acceptable by mercedes standards for all AMG cars to burn up to 1qt every thousand miles. He went into more detail by explaining that AMG purposely hand build our engines with looser tolerances so that they last longer and are more durrable the flip side to it is it can cause oil consumption. But with the level of oil you are consuming i wouldn't rule out faulty metals in the rings or possibly poor servicing by a previous owner maybe. I would look into buying a aftermarket extended warranty

I am not sure there would be a inexpensive fix for whatever the issue is. If it is burning oil due to piston rings or valvetrain issues the fix may not be worth the investment. Might be cheaper to just keep adding oil.
One possibility could be the engine is spitting oil out the crankcase breather system and then back through the intake and then burning it in the combustion chamber. If this where the case then the fix for this would be worthwhile.
Not all AMG engines burn oil as the C32's do not burn any oil. I change my oil every 10K miles and it uses none in between changes.

So for the most part everything that everyone is saying is unfortunately true. You will burn oil. I tend to burn oil when driving aggressively. When I cool it the oil lasts longer.
I use mobile1 0-40w and go 10k between changes. Have 85k on the clock.
I've done everything from long road trips to pretending I'm Mario Andretti at the track.
You'll burn oil...
When I bought the car I too was worried about this. Since it was under warranty I had them investigate. Did the whole seal up the car and see how much oil was being consumed. Turns out I was within spec and actually had an oil leak they didn't see when I asked them to inspect it before. I guess the fear of a whole new engine means they actually look when you ask them too. =)
Anyways attached is the service bulletin they printed out for me.

Ahh didn't see the comments about 1qt every 500 miles. Thats a bit too much.
There is a gasket that is a pain to change and sometimes isn't seen by a tech. Its not the valve covers its something else.. I want to say they have to pull the transmission to get to it.
Someone help me out here.. they are common on the C55's and commonly leak... but its weather or not they're shot is when you need to replace them. I've had mine done already and its almost time to do it again. Let me go through my paperwork and I'll get back to you.

no you dont have to drop the tranny to replace the valve covers unless its the seal between the engine and the tranny but thats not the "valve cover"

2005 C55 Oil Consumption
My wife bought a 2005 C55 AMG in March 2012 with about 105k miles on it. We had the valve cover replaced before bringing it home.
She now has about 119k miles. Of course that is about 14k miles from March to December. In August I did the B service. Since then it has burned 2 quarts of oil in 8k miles.
That is a consumption rate of about 1 quart per 4k miles.
We use Castrol Syntec 5w-40 Full Synthetic.
She drives it like a granny and recently boasted of a trip from Birmingham, AL to Atlanta, GA averaging 23 mpg !
My independent and massive c32 enthusiast mechanic says the CRANKSHAFT SEAL leaks a bit, although there is NO OIL ON MY GARAGE FLOOR ?!
Any thoughts?

I'm happy to read that the weeping valve cover gasket is pretty normal. I remember after flogging her a bit I got a hint of burnt oil smell- scared me, but the car still hasn't used enough oil to warrant attention.

Thanks for the info except can you state mileage instead of time? 6-8 weeks means nothing because I'll drive 1000 miles in that time while you might drive 5000 miles.

MB states oil consumption for AMG engines can be as great as 1.35 qt every 1000 miles.
