Thinking of Removing Primary Cats and you live in NJ - Be Careful

I had my car inspected at a state owned motor vehicle inspection station today. The guy who did the inspection allowed me to sit in the passenger seat while he drove down the inspection lane. I was surprised to see a video image (high quality) of the underside of my car on the computer screen as he drove past this one section. You could see everything in great detail (and I was pleased to see how clean the underside of my car was ). Anyway, when I asked what that was for, he said to make sure the car still has its Cat's in place.

Mine is stock, so no problems there. However, for anyone who lives in NJ and plans to remove their primary cat's, you will need to find an independent inspection station (one that is more "informal" with these things) if you plan on passing the inspection.

I don't know how long they have used the video camera's. As I said, it was the first time they ever let me sit in the car while the inspection occurred. In the past they used to bark at you if you were anywhere near the car when they did their thing - which annoyed me to no end.

Did you go to the inspection station on Rt 130 in Dayton? The state has been inspecting the underside of vehicles for years with mirrors. I once was failed because I had a hose clamp securing a flex pipe mesh. The practice is to remove the pipe, cut a hole in the "top" of the catalitic converter, remove the inards, then weld back in the piece that was cut out.

When removing cat material on the the cars, I leave the primary alone, lower the secondary cats, cut the top off hollow out the cat, weld the top back on. Unless someone lowers the exhaust or uses a mirror to look on the top, you cannot tell they have been hollowed out.

Nope. Went to the station at Bakers Basin on Route 1 in Princeton.

They had the mirror on the pole sitting there, but I did not see the need for it given the detailed view provided by the camera mounted in the ground.

A person would have to be a total idiot if they removed both cats and would still go to a state owned motor vehicle inspection station.
