Who developed their own air intake system? Why aren't more folks doing this?

Me too if you don't mind. I can get everything locally except the spectre air filters. Was it part number 9833? Is the filter assembly a good looking product? Summitracing looks like the only place to get them and have them ship internationally.

$134.40 at Parts.com not a bad price for the y pipe and hoses!!!
http://www.jegs.com/i/Spectre/865/98...ductId=1902166
for the air filters

Unfortunately neither do international shipping for me but the jegs price is the same as summit. Personally I might consider making an alloy y pipe for myself to keep costs down.

Sceet - aircraftspruce (where we can get our sc oil for cheap)
Aluminum tubing - ebay
Inline air filter - jegs
Silicone couplers - your local auto parts store
You will also have to drill a hole in the aluminum tubing to fit the pcv hose from the breather valve on driver's side. I was looking for that fitting for hours, but was able to source rubber grommet that fits perfectly from home depot for 50 cents
The price on y-pipe and hoses is cheap indeed, I might have to buy it to have a better looking system.
You will absolutely love the sound of this intake! SC whine can still be heard, but there is also this "ballsy" sound that cannot be described

Is the E55 y-splitter the same as the SL55? I found you can buy it here separate from the hoses for $72.00
http://www.parts.com/parts/2004/MERC...gramCallOut=10
It is odd how Parts.com has parts and diagrams for certain model years and not others. Also, that part for the SL55 is only found by searching the part number, I couldn't find a diagram by backing out.

The y-pipe is the same for all V8K M113 engines I believe.
Mercedes changed the parts diagram a while back and sells y-pipe complete with hoses now, instead of separate like how they used to do it.
I would buy complete y-pipe with hoses and create a better looking system. I am not sure what the inlet diameter is at the end of the hoses that connects to the air boxes though. I hope it is uniform 3 inch and can be directly connected to the aluminum tubes.

" I hope it is uniform 3 inch and can be directly connected to the aluminum tubes."
That is why I was opting to just buy the Y-pipe and use long rubber furnco adapters or rubber hose.

Hey guys......update:
Ordered parts last week after seeing this fantastic post. A big thanks to ddtham for sharing his intake.
I just received my SL55 y-pipe with factory hoses from parts.com. To my door for $150. GREAT news.......the factory hoses are exactly 3", perfect. It gets better.........the drivers side already has the PCV hose grommet. No drilling of 90 degree tubing required, plug and play. Will just need to cut my 3" 90 aluminum pipe to fit the entire unit properly.
This should be a no-brainer for anyone who wants to build a nice free flowing intake for less then half the cost of what can be purchased already fabricated. I'm thankful to vendors for still making products for a 10 year old, limited production car............but with the money I saved I can get the trans programming from EC.
SL55 Y-pipe with factory hoses from Parts.com was $150 delivered
2 sections of 3" Aluminum pipe from Ebay was $40 delivered
2 Spectre inline air filters from Jegs was $140 delivered
4 silicon couplers was $25
10 clamps, $23
Grand total of $378 spent.......and I'm guessing 2 hours of labor since I'll only need to make 4 cuts max. That's pretty darn good huh?

Marc,
Nicely done! I am sure you will enjoy the extra power and the gutsy sound coming out when the sc spools!
Next step for me would be a diy intake scoops, let me know if you would like to bounce some ideas
I would love to fit either NW devil horns or TTM scoops to complete my intake. Some cutting and fabrication will be required however.

I also went ahead with the diy method.
e55 splitter from parts.com $150.00
Just the two in-line filters from spectre $40
4x 3" rubber furnco $12.00
4x 3" to 4" rubber furnco $16.00
2x 3" 45* pvc schedule 40 street sweeps $6
About 4' x 3" & 4" schedule 40 pvc free from my basement
Black high temp paint free from my basement
Chop saw, nut driver.
Total cost $224.00 and about 3 hours.
The larger Y is a ***** to stuff under the cowel but loosening the 4 cowel screws helps. I used 4" pvc and 4"to3" furncos to create the inline airbox with spectres replacement filters.
I'll post pictures soon. The change in throttle response and ease of acceleration throughout the whole power curve is very noticeable.
I think the pvc is a good insulator, but might also hold heat.. let me know what you think.

Looks good. What did you use to hold the form of the E55 Y-splitter? It looks like you clamped and sleeved the silicone hoses over the splitter, before connecting it with 90 degrees PCV pipes? I was just worried it might create a bottleneck for the air going into throttle body. On the other hand, good job.

some great DIY work in here.
i would recommend getting the inside of the intake pipes coated with teflon much like needswings does. it does not cost much. i have worked with flowbenches before when building motors and coatings like teflon make a big difference in the amount of air a given piece can flow. in our intake applications i believe this type of coating would be very beneficial especially with an upgraded pulley drawing even more air through the intake.
if i recall correctly, i think rob posted flowbench numbers showing the improvement the coating made on his intake.

Update. Finally got a few hours to myself today. Got it all mocked up. Tomorrow I'll do some fine adjustments and get the clamps the way I want them. Hardest part was getting the Sl55 Y pipe in there. Talk about a tight fit. Taking those 4 bolts off for the cowl cover helps. Took it for a quick drive, SC sounds very nice now........like it should have from the factory. Total time was 2.5 hours......very easy mod if you do the homework prior.
Morning fellas. OK, spent 30 mins getting everything just the way I wanted it and here are the final results. I'm very happy with it and would recommend to anyone who's on the fence. Enjoy! I'm going to as soon as I eat breakfast. Radio OFF, windows down and WOT to hear that sweet sound.
Straight on

Thanks very much. Would not have done it without your inspiration so thank you!
Driving impressions = Bad ***. It's fantastic, the sound is SO much better than before. I'll get some sound clips tomorrow and post them. The SC Whine is very pronounced and my **** dyno says I certainly did not lose any power. Now on to the next install........think EC HE is next.
