Some of the 2002 and early 2003 owners reported this, but I've never heard it on my car.
On one hand it's nice having a quiet car, on the other hand it's pretty funny that my girlfriend's 20th AE GTI makes a more menacing growl than my car.

I BELIEVE THAT IF YOU HAVE AN OPEN AIR AIR FILTER ELEMENT IT WILL INCREASE THE VOLUME OF THE WHINE....I HAD A JR BLOWER IN A HONDA A WHILE BACK AND ASIDE FROM A VERY HIGH PITCH WHIRLING SOUND FROM THE IMPELLERS OF THE BLOWER THERE WAS A RATHER LOUD SOUNDING WHINE WHENEVER THE GAS PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, IT GOT LOUDER THE MORE I MASHED THE GAS PEDAL, THE SOUND CAME FROM THE AIR GETTING SUCKED INTO THE CONE STYLE AIR FILTER....KINDA COOL...
