How hard is it to remove the diff?
Hey All,
Do you guys know how hard it is to remove the differential from a C32?
I'm farily mechanically inclined and have ramps which should make removal a little more comfortable while under the car.
Are there any specialty tools that I'm going to need. I don't want to get half way through the job and then be pissed cause I don't have some special Benz only tool.
How about the different axles that 2002's come with?
Thanks!

This will help. The part I aways struggle with for any major surgery is the axel nut holding it into the hub. If you can't break that free then its a no go. I don't have air tools or an electric impact gun. Otherwise it looks straight forward just need to go carefully and pry on lots of things.
The only part I have not yet researched is the backlash and any other procedures that need to be done/checked when installing the quaife in the housing.

It's a huge pain in the ***. Getting the axles out is a pain in the ***. Getting the differential case out is a pain in the *** - at least it was on the C55, the C32 could be different since it has the smaller differential. On the C55 the cover extends out way past the housing on the left side for the mount. I had it all jammed up in there between that, the exhaust, and the driveshaft. Getting the first snap-ring out is a pain in the ***. The snap-rings themselves are actually the shims, so they have a good bit of pressure on them for the bearing pre-load. There is actually a special tool that spreads the case apart slightly to make getting the first snap-ring out easier, but I didn't have that. Swapping the ring gear over is also a pain in the ***. I ended up putting the ring gear in a toaster oven and the differential in the freezer for a while to get them mated. Make sure you have a good dial indicator to check the back lash.

hmmmm... hold on though. Just to be clear, I just want to remove the diff housing itself as I'm going to send it off to have an LSD installed.
